Responsibilities

Under general supervision and medical direction, performs respiratory care related procedures. Exercises considerable judgment in accordance with the physician's treatment plan and within the scope of departmental policies and procedures. Responsibilities include patient/family assessment and management, resource management, care facilitation, and discharge planning as required. Assess residents' condition, administer prescribed therapy and aerosolized medications, observe and record progress and response to therapy modalities, including monitoring for adverse reactions.

Provides in-service training to residents, family members, and facility staff. The resident population is primarily adult and geriatric. Applies knowledge of growth and development appropriate to the resident's age to ensure care meets physical and psychological needs. Involves appropriate parties in assessment, treatment, and continuing care as needed.

Initiates, monitors, and maintains life support systems for residents in the skilled nursing facility. Performs airway care and maintenance. Manages artificial ventilator status as directed by an approved protocol. Maintains and troubleshoots mechanical ventilators. Participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures of bag ventilation and closed chest massage. Initiates, monitors, and documents performance of various respiratory care modalities. Performs assessment of residents' cardiopulmonary status using physical assessment, history, laboratory findings, radiological studies, pulmonary function testing, and professional judgment to formulate a respiratory care plan per physician order.

Performs tasks prior to treating a resident, including checking physician orders for completeness and ensuring proper documentation of diagnosis, ICD-10 code, therapy type and duration, medication dosage, FiO2, and frequency. Checks resident charts for history and pertinent information to determine bedside precautions. Observes and charts vital signs, breath sounds, and general appearance, and provides teaching to residents. Notifies supervisor of new starts and discontinuations. Administers respiratory care procedures, dispenses medications, adjusts devices, and monitors patient response. Reports pertinent information to the resident's nurse and maintains thorough charting.

Inspects and tests equipment; disassembles, cleans, and reassembles as required. Maintains adequate equipment supplies and performs required administrative duties and record keeping. Disposes of equipment properly. Assists in emergency cardio-pulmonary resuscitation as part of the emergency team. CPR certification is required.

Initiates, administers, evaluates response to, and documents all therapy modalities according to departmental procedures and physician orders, including intermittent positive pressure breathing, handheld nebulizer, chest physical therapy modalities, percussion, vibration, breathing and cough retraining exercises, deep tracheal suctioning, incentive spirometry, and sputum induction. Recognizes adverse reactions and documents care. Maintains and documents all resident care services in the medical record. Transcribes verbal orders related to respiratory care procedures.
