Feral Cat Coalition - Experienced Clinic Assistant

Job Description:

Role: Contribute to animal welfare and decrease feral cat populations in San Diego and surrounding communities by supporting weekly spay/neuter medical clinics.

Feral Cat Coalition: Since 1992, Feral Cat Coalition has provided over 80,000 spay and neuter procedures to cats throughout our communities. We see anywhere from 30–70 cats per clinic, with a majority being feral or stray cats. We also provide low-cost services for rescues and owned pets. Our staff finds fulfillment knowing they have helped change the lives of every cat who comes through our doors.

Location: Feral Cat Coalition Spay & Neuter Clinic in La Mesa, CA

Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be open to cross-training and rotating stations. Duties require a good deal of hand movement and strength
  • Depending on your station for the day, you must be able to:
  • Physically administer 100–300 injections per day, or
  • Shave the surgical sites of 30–60 cats per day, or
  • Express the bladders of 30–60 cats per day, or
  • Monitor patient vitals during surgery
  • Proficient in routine medical procedures such as blood draws, vaccine administration, surgical monitoring, ear cytology preparation, and microscope use
  • Set up and break down/clean the facility for spay/neuter clinics, including the surgery room
  • Experience with surgical equipment and machines preferred
  • Provide food, kennel cleaning, and enrichment for cats in temporary boarding care
  • Clean, wrap, and autoclave surgical packs
  • Maintain medical paperwork
  • Demonstrate professional communication
  • Ability to thrive in a team and complete tasks independently
  • Comply with medical and safety standard operating procedures
  • Maintain a customer service attitude and inclusive nature toward team members, volunteers, clients, and the public
  • Contribute to an educational environment

Hours and Compensation:

  • This is a part-time position starting at $20.50–$23.50 per hour. The rate is determined by education and experience, with the highest level reserved for highly skilled candidates
  • We are looking for an employee to work 3 days per week. Must be available Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays

Requirements:

  • Customer service attitude
  • Willing and eager to learn, take direction, and mentor others
  • Able to safely lift 40 pounds
  • Detail-oriented
  • Understanding that this role requires direct contact with felines, including feral/community cats
  • Demonstrate consistent attendance and punctuality
  • Communicate positively and effectively with coworkers, clients, and volunteers
  • Comply with all standard operating procedures and safety protocols outlined in the Employee Manual, handbook, and other training documentation
  • 1 year of experience working in the animal medical field required
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be willing to complete euthanasia certification after 1 year of employment with Feral Cat Coalition and perform humane euthanasia services when needed

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in emergency care such as intubation, IV catheter placement and CPR
  • Bilingual in Spanish

Communications:

  • Attend one staff meeting per month (usually on a clinic day)
  • Check group or work emails 1–2 times per week
  • Stay up to date on issues if a meeting is missed
  • Follow all communication protocols listed in the Employee Manual
  • Ability to communicate with staff members, board members, volunteers, and partner organizations
