COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Flagship Pioneering is a platform innovation company that invents and builds companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps. Those big leaps in human health, sustainability and beyond exponentially accelerate scientific progress in areas ranging from disease detection and treatment and nature-positive agriculture to novel applications of AI that are driving the creation of new technologies.

What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance science and technology by uniting innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our scientific founders, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and transform for the benefit of people and planet.

Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity’s most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.

Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE’s “Change the World” list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies and has been twice named to Fast Company’s annual list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies.

THE ROLE

Flagship Pioneering is seeking a Senior Field Manager to lead and coordinate all field operations campaigns as we scale our climate protective programs. This is a critical operational role that will take ownership of international and domestic logistics, regulatory coordination, equipment management, and field instrumentation. The Senior Field Manager will be the operational backbone of this early-stage company’s field campaigns and the primary interface between our ground teams, local agencies, consultants, and internal leadership.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan and execute field operations campaigns end-to-end, including meteorological station deployment, experiment event ground-truthing instrumentation, and data hand-off to the modeling team;

Monitor and maintain monitoring networks, ensuring data flow for modeling and data analysis;

Own all in-domain logistics including regulatory permits, multi-agency coordination, import/export compliance, and local vendor relationships;

Manage equipment packing, shipping logistics, and field inventory tracking across campaigns;

Manage and coordinate field consultants and contractors in lieu of senior engineering time, serving as the primary on-the-ground operational lead;

Interface professionally with local regulatory authorities and external stakeholders, maintaining composure and effectiveness in dynamic, high-stakes field environments;

Translate campaign learnings into documented operational frameworks and standard practices.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in earth sciences, atmospheric science, oceanography, environmental engineering, or a related field; equivalent field experience may substitute.

3–8+ years of experience in field operations, scientific field campaigns, or operational logistics in remote or international environments;

Demonstrated experience managing logistics in international or developing-country contexts, including permits, customs/import-export processes, and coordination with local agencies;

Hands-on experience with field instrumentation including meteorological sensors, radiosonde or sounding equipment, and/or similar atmospheric measurement systems;

Strong customer-facing and stakeholder management skills; proven ability to remain calm, organized, and effective while managing complexity and competing demands in high-pressure environments;

Experience coordinating with aviation authorities or pilots on field-based aerial operations is a strong plus; familiarity with UAV operations is a plus;

Proven ability to work autonomously in a fast-moving startup environment, managing multiple workstreams simultaneously and making sound decisions with limited oversight;

Strong operational documentation and communication skills; ability to generate clear field reports, standard operating procedures, and post-campaign summaries for internal leadership;

Multi-language proficiency is a significant plus;

A genuine passion for working in extreme or remote environments and a commitment to building the operational infrastructure that supports cutting-edge innovation.

LOCATION: Boulder, CO / Field-Based (with significant domestic and international travel required)
