Position Description

The dispatcher is an essential part of the law enforcement team. Dispatchers act in partnership with police officers working the road and supply critical information and crucial services for their day-to-day operation. Responsibilities include preliminary investigations, interpretation of complex computer printouts, and coordinating the deployment of emergency personnel and equipment during crisis and routine situations. A working knowledge of interrogation techniques, CPR, and basic first aid is required. This position will perform functions in a bias‑free manner.

Education

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience

Emergency Dispatcher 7: No specific type or amount of experience is required.

Emergency Dispatcher E8: One year of experience equivalent to an Emergency Dispatcher 7.

Special Requirements

CPR certification may be required. Candidates must also pass the agency-administered examination that tests computer and other dispatching-related skills. Applicants without documented previous emergency dispatch experience must pass this examination.

This position requires passing a pre‑employment screening, including a criminal history background check and a fingerprint check by the Michigan State Police.

Screening Criteria

  • Scoring on pre‑employment basic aptitude test (if required)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Emergency Dispatch Center operations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of communication and computerized equipment required to operate an emergency communications system, including the MPSCS 800 MHz system
  • Experience in communicating effectively with law enforcement personnel and external agencies
  • Experience in public safety and emergency service operations
  • Writing ability as demonstrated through resume and accompanying documentation
  • Education and training relevant to the position
