FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE / PARAMEDIC

The City of Stockton Fire Department is seeking career‑minded individuals for the position of Firefighter Trainee / Paramedic. Candidates will attend the Stockton Regional Fire Academy and, upon successful completion, transition to a sworn position.

Eligibility

  • Active valid Paramedic license issued by the State of California or National Registry at the time of application.
  • Active on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List (SEL) on 7/31/2026.
  • High school diploma or GED; college‑level fire science coursework and/or previous experience fighting fires is desirable.
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license (or ability to obtain by completion of the academy).
  • Valid CAL‑JAC Candidate Physical Ability Card (CPAT) issued between 7/31/2025 and 7/31/2026.
  • Firefighter endorsement from the California DMV within 17 months of appointment.
  • Pass background investigation, polygraph, psychological test, medical examination, and DOJ fingerprint clearance.
  • Maintain all required licenses and certifications throughout employment.

Responsibilities

During the Fire Academy, trainees will participate in fire suppression, prevention, and emergency services training, including paramedic duties. After graduation, they will serve as sworn firefighters, performing fire suppression, rescue operations, and emergency medical services as required.

Salary and Compensation

During the Academy: $69,281.58 annually.

Post‑academy step wages:

  • Step 2: $72,844.89 annually
  • Step 3: $76,593.27 annually (after 6 months at Step

2)

  • Step 4: $80,526.23 annually (after 6 months at Step

3)

  • Step 5: $84,677.54 annually (after 1 year at Step

4)

  • Step 6: $89,030.82 annually (after 1 year at Step

5)

  • Step 7: $93,602.71 annually (after 1 year at Step

6)

  • Step 8: $98,409.36 annually (after 1 year at Step

7)

  • Step 9 (Top Step): $ annually (after 6 months at Step

8)

Additional Pay:

  • Longevity Pay: 2% for 5 years, 4% for 10 years, 6% for 15 years, 8% for 20 years.
  • Paramedic Certification: 12% of top step Firefighter Engineer pay.
  • HAZ/MAT Assignment: 5% of top step for sworn employees actively assigned.
  • Education Incentive: 3% for Intermediate Education Certification, 5% for Advanced Education Certification.

Continuing Education for Paramedics: up to 24 hours in a 2‑year period compensated at straight‑time rate with prior approval.

  • Holidays: 13 fixed and 1 floating per year.

  • Uniform Allowance: $950 per year.

Additional Information

Firefighters must respond to emergencies at all times and reside within 45 minutes of City Hall. New hires have three months to comply. This is a non‑exempt, temporary position until academy completion.

Veteran’s Preference

Pending approval by the Civil Service Commission, eligible veterans receive five preference points. Veterans must provide DD‑214 Member‑4 copy with at least 181 consecutive days of honorable service.

Qualifications are reviewed; candidates active on SEL and meeting written exam criteria will be invited for oral panel interviews scheduled for the week of August 10, 2026. Minimum score thresholds apply for written and oral components.
