Job Summary

JOB DESCRIPTION

A plant inspector is responsible for performing quality control and safety checks on aggregate materials such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone. They ensure that the materials meet required specifications for use in construction and that plant operations adhere to all safety and environmental regulations. The role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work in varying conditions.

Essential Functions

  • Quality control and testing:
  • Conduct frequent sampling and laboratory testing of aggregates to check for quality, size, and other required properties.
  • Perform specific tests, including sieve analysis, to determine the gradation of materials.
  • Monitor and adjust plant production to ensure the final product meets all specifications.
  • Inspections and safety:
  • Conduct visual inspections of plant equipment, including crushers, conveyors, and screens, to identify potential issues or defects.
  • Help maintain a robust preventative maintenance program by documenting the condition of equipment and reporting items needing repair.
  • Prioritize safety by adhering to all protocols and regulations set by agencies such as the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).
  • Promptly report all safety concerns, incidents, and equipment malfunctions.
  • Documentation and communication:
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all inspection findings, test results, and maintenance activities.
  • Assist in compiling and reporting summaries of testing results from completed projects.
  • Provide clear and effective communication to supervisors, plant operators, and quality control staff.

  • Production Planning - Efficiently organizes, schedules, and oversees production processes to meet business objectives, optimize resources, and ensure quality output.

Responsibilities

Education

  • High School diploma or GED.

Experience

  • Previous experience working in an aggregate, asphalt, or concrete plant is highly recommended.
  • Plant-specific certifications for materials testing (e.g., Soils & Aggregate Inspector, Paving Inspector) may be required or preferred.
  • Working knowledge of aggregate production processes, including crushing, screening, and washing.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Ability to read and follow detailed specifications and procedures.
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to identify problems.
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work, including climbing equipment and carrying material samples.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and potentially dusty environments.

Other Requirements

  • Time in the office performing administrative tasks, planning schedules, and analyzing reports combined with time in the facility.

  • Ability to wear PPE with on site/location.

Hourly Range. The base hourly range for this role is between $35.00 - $42.00 per hour. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate’s compensation, we consider a number of factors, including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
