Job Purpose Statement/s
The position of Custodian/Grounds Keeper is for the purpose of providing students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop. The Custodian/Grounds Keeper assists the head custodian in maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility; providing adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; while minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure.
Essential Job Functions
- Maintain school grounds as directed by the head custodian.
- Clean building premises and school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
- Wash or scrub walls, floors, ceilings, furniture, fixtures, windows, and mirrors, using hand or power equipment.
- Sweep and dust.
- Prepare surfaces for varnish, paint, wax, and/or polish.
- Minor repairs of equipment, furniture, and fixtures.
- Remove broken glass and repair windows.
- Mow and edge and rake grass, using power or hand tools.
- Trim shrubs and trees, using power and hand tools.
- Water lawns, shrubs, trees, and move and store hoses.
- Shovel snow and clear ice from entrances, when needed.
- Plant shrubs and maintain flower beds, as needed.
- Replace/Repair door hardware and outside lighting.
- Communicate effectively, both written and orally, with all building personnel, students and parents.
- Understands and follows district policies and regulations relating to area of responsibilities.
Other Job Functions
- Handle minor emergencies such as cleaning up after sick people, tripped fire alarms, tripped electrical fuses, shorted bells, locked doors, jammed pencil sharpeners, broken glass, etc.
- Keep records relative to job.
- Maintain playground equipment.
- Assist in the general security and fire safety of facilities and grounds.
- Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
- Repair furniture and equipment for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
Requirements – Qualifications
- Experience Preferred:
Prior job related experience, preferably in a school setting.
- Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities
Required:
- Skills to use cleaning agents; supplies and equipment; perform basic math to calculate accurate dilution of cleaning agents.
- Knowledge of methods and use of cleaning materials, equipment and supplies, safe work practices, district policies and regulations.
- Abilities to stand for prolonged periods, follow oral and written instructions, work independently with minimal supervision, perform a variety of tasks, understand and execute oral and written instructions. Significant physical abilities include reaching/handling, fingering, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/visual accommodation.
- Ability to speak a second language preferred.
- Education Required:
High school diploma or equivalent.
- Licenses, Bonding and/or Testing
Required:
Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance (applicant agrees to assume cost upon offer of employment).

Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
