Job Responsibilities
The equipment operator will primarily work from the South Kent Landfill with standard working hours of Monday through Friday from 7:00am - 4:00pm.
The successful candidate will be charged with operating heavy equipment, assisting with transfer operations needs, cleaning and maintaining equipment and completing other projects as directed by the supervisor. This particular Equipment Operator position should anticipate spending less than 50% of the work week operating equipment on the working face and the remaining time maintaining equipment.
- Must be able to operate bulldozers, landfill compactors, and front-end loaders in a safe and efficient manner.
- Must be able to efficiently grade ditches, roads, ash and prepare finished slopes to grades within the tolerances required by the supervisor or operations manager.
- This position will help to cover the lunch period for the operators that are on the working face of the landfill.
- Must be familiar with maintenance of machinery and able to troubleshoot problems such as fluid leaks, mechanical wear issues, or major system malfunctions such as final drives, transmission or cooling systems.
- Will perform work as directed by the supervisor which may include those tasks associated with lower job classifications including but not limited to the transfer operator working within the site.
- Must be physically able to clean machines thoroughly on a regular basis. This includes removal of belly pans, removal of trash that has collected on and within the machine, thoroughly washing the machine including the radiator and utilize compressed air to clean the radiators. This may include cleaning the cab of the equipment and making minor repairs such as hose replacement, grease fitting replacement, light replacement or other miscellaneous repairs.
- Must be organized and maintain complete and accurate maintenance records and other documentation as required by the supervisor.
- May supervise work of a small number of helpers and must communicate well with others on the team.
Must be able to lift load of up to 50 pounds. Must be organized and able to complete and maintain accurate maintenance records. Must possess a valid, unrestricted Michigan drivers license. Must be able to communicate with individuals from widely diverse backgrounds and direct a small number of helpers.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent combined with a minimum of one year of work experience in the operation of heavy equipment required; a minimum of three years of heavy equipment experience and/or experience in the solid waste industry preferred.
