The Doctor's Assistant provides direct support to Emergency veterinarians and the Emergency department by assisting with client communication, patient flow, medical record management, and daily operational tasks. This role is essential in helping doctors provide efficient, high-quality patient care while ensuring an exceptional client experience during often stressful and emotional situations.
About the Role
The Veterinary Doctor's Assistant – Emergency Service supports Emergency veterinarians in delivering timely, compassionate care to patients requiring urgent and critical treatment. This position serves as a liaison between the doctor, clients, and the medical team while helping coordinate the daily workflow of a fast-paced Emergency department.
The ideal candidate is organized, compassionate, detail-oriented, and able to remain calm under pressure while working in a dynamic veterinary specialty environment.
What You Will Do
Provide direct support to Emergency veterinarians throughout appointments, treatments, and patient admissions
Assist with client communication, including discussing treatment plans, estimates, updates, and discharge instructions as directed by the veterinarian
Facilitate communication between doctors, technicians, client service representatives, and pet owners
Prepare medical records, treatment sheets, and discharge paperwork
Document patient histories, doctor notes, and client communications accurately within the medical record
Assist in coordinating patient flow and workflow within the Emergency department
Ensure exam rooms and consultation areas are prepared for patient evaluations
Support patient admissions, transfers, and discharges
Help maintain organized and efficient scheduling of rechecks, diagnostics, and consultations
Obtain and relay client concerns, questions, and updates to the veterinarian
Provide compassionate support to clients during emergency and critical care situations
Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all client and patient interactions
Collaborate closely with Emergency, ICU, Surgery, and Specialty teams to ensure seamless patient care
About You
Previous experience working in an Emergency required
Strong interest in Emergency and Critical Care medicine
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to remain calm and compassionate during high-stress and emotional situations
Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
Detail-oriented with excellent follow-through
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Proficient with medical records, computer systems, and client communications
Dependable, professional, and committed to providing outstanding client service
Compensation Schedule
Compensation: $25.00 - $33.00 per hour, based on experience
Schedule: Four 10-hour shifts, rotating schedule to include weekends
