Job Title: CNC Swiss Machinist

Job Description

The CNC Swiss Machinist sets up and operates CNC Swiss machines to produce precision components for advanced medical devices. This role focuses on achieving tight tolerances, maintaining high quality standards in an FDA and ISO compliant environment, and supporting continuous production through collaboration, problem-solving, and equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC Swiss machines (including Star and Tornos) to produce precision parts and instruments according to engineering specifications and production requirements.
  • Use appropriate machine tools and workholding methods to ensure efficient, repeatable, and accurate machining operations.
  • Perform in-process and final inspections of parts to verify they meet required tolerances, dimensions, and surface finishes in accordance with customer and internal specifications.
  • Interpret and read blueprints and technical drawings to determine machining operations, sequence of operations, and inspection requirements.
  • Support the maintenance and basic troubleshooting of CNC Swiss machines to minimize downtime and maintain optimal performance.
  • Collaborate closely with team members and department leadership to adjust and accommodate changes in the production schedule.
  • Identify material, technical, production, and safety issues that may impact the manufacturing schedule and promptly communicate concerns to the appropriate department leadership.
  • Apply knowledge of metals and their properties to select appropriate tooling, cutting parameters, and processes for efficient and high-quality machining.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers and micrometers to verify part dimensions and ensure consistent quality.
  • Follow and support FDA and ISO standards, procedures, and documentation requirements throughout the manufacturing process.
  • Contribute to a clean, safe, and organized work area and adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities and on-the-job training to enhance machining skills and process efficiency.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of experience with CNC Swiss turning (such as Star and Tornos) or CNC milling (such as Haas) in an ISO regulated manufacturing environment; internships and part-time experience are acceptable.
  • Hands-on experience setting up CNC Swiss machines, including tooling, offsets, and program loading.
  • Proficiency with CAM software, with GibbsCAM strongly preferred, for programming and optimizing CNC operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform CNC turning operations with a focus on precision and repeatability.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills, including the ability to interpret geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) and other technical requirements.
  • Proficiency in quality inspection practices using precision measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers.
  • Ability to perform CNC setups, including fixture and tool selection, machine zeroing, and verification of programs.
  • Familiarity with FDA and ISO standards and working within a regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Solid understanding of metals and their properties as they relate to machining processes and tool selection.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to identify and communicate issues that may affect production.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and adapt to changing production schedules.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with GibbsCAM or similar CAM programming software for CNC Swiss and milling operations.
  • Exposure to robot-assisted surgery (RAS) and minimally invasive surgery (MIS) component manufacturing is a plus.
  • Experience working in a world-class, ISO-compliant manufacturing facility.
  • Comfort working with advanced CNC equipment and regularly updated machinery.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development and on-the-job training.
