Position: Fire Captain / Paramedic
Firefighter
Participates and supervises in the daily activities, services and operations of an assigned shift in a respective fire station of the Fire Department; oversees the training and education of assigned firefighting personnel; ensures general maintenance of station vehicles, equipment and apparatus; responds to emergency fire suppression, disaster and medical situations; and provides staff assistance to assigned command personnel.
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Supervise firefighting personnel and activities of one fire station during an assigned shift; assume command responsibilities at fire suppression, emergency medical and rescue incidents; coordinates activities and operations with the Fire Chief.
- Participate in identifying opportunities for improving fire suppression methods and procedures; identify resource needs; review with appropriate management staff; implement improvements.
- Assign work activities and projects as needed including, but not limited to, equipment maintenance, hydrant maintenance, uniform and bunker gear supplies, and fire hose maintenance and testing; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures; meet with co-workers to identify and resolve problems.
- Assume command of fire suppression efforts in the absence of the Fire Chief including directing fire streams to ensure proper cover of exposures; drive and operate various vehicles, equipment and apparatus as needed; confine and always extinguish fire incorporating proper firefighting and safety procedures.
- Coordinates and participates in the maintenance of building, station grounds, equipment and vehicles.
- Assists with the planning and conducts fire safety programs for schools, church and civic organizations and other community groups.
- Assists in training, motivating and evaluating assigned personnel; work with subordinate personnel to correct deficiencies; schedule assigned personnel in connection with other Fire Captains in other stations.
- Perform fire suppression, rescue, and EMS duties in response to emergency calls.
- Manage, review and verify accuracy of daily records and Incident Reports
Receives direction from the Fire Chief. Exercises direct supervision over firefighting personnel
Operation, maintenance and uses of modern fire fighting apparatus and equipment.
Operational characteristics, services and activities of comprehensive fire suppression and prevention programs
International Fire and Building Codes
The geography of the city and surrounding area
Specialized communications equipment
Various building construction techniques and the consequence of each type on fire suppression and prevention activities
Safe work practices and procedures
Approved procedures and policies for hazardous or toxic materials storage, transport and clean up
Procedures and techniques for provision of emergency medical and rescue services as required achieving certification as Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Texas
Fire science and principles of hydraulics
Pertinent Federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations
Personnel Management
Incident Command Procedures
Work under stress and use good judgment in emergency situations
Oversee and assist in resolving a variety of situations characterized by danger at on-scene emergencies; conflicts between assigned personnel
Operate specialized emergency communications equipment
Maintain and operate department vehicles, apparatus and other emergency equipment
Prepare clear and concise reports
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Ability to consistently meet deadlines and complete projects utilizing excellent time management skills
Pass a medical physical examination
Recommend and implement goals and objectives for providing effective fire suppression and prevention services
Establish and maintain effective relationships between all assigned personnel
Maintain mental capacity that permits making sound judgments regarding work
Demonstrate intrinsic motivation, high ethical and moral standards
Work a 48-hour shift and maintain regular and reliable attendance
Clear a post-offer medical physical examination, drug test, criminal background and other appropriate testing as required by the Fire Department
High School Diploma or GED required
Four years of full-time employment with the Richland Hills Fire Department or eight or more years of full-time fire service experience.
Class B Texas driver's license
Advanced Fire Fighter Certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
Paramedic or Licensed Paramedic Certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services
Instructor II Certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
