JOB TITLE: Heavy Equipment Operator

REPORTS TO: Assistant General Manager

LOCATION: 127 Fillmore Ave. Buffalo NY, 14210

JOB TYPE: Full-time, non-exempt.

HOURS: Monday - Friday 7:00AM - 4:00PM, Saturdays and overtime as needed.

COMPENSATION: $19.00-22.50/ hr., based on skills and experience

Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator will be responsible for operating the various pieces of heavy equipment in the yard. Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various types of heavy machinery, as well as performing light maintenance. Will be required to unload trucks and move material around the yard. Must be familiar with and adhere to service requirements, equipment and operator limitations and safe operating procedures at all times.

Essential Job Functions:

• Safe handling and/or moving material
• Knowledge of the excavator/magnet/grapple loading requirements; material shipping specifications; weight thresholds, etc.
• Effective communication with all site personne
• Maintain daily logs of equipment usage, maintenance, etc.
• Daily inspection and maintenance of equipment
• Identify, report, correct and/or prevent hazards
• Perform tasks maintaining all health, safety and environmental rules and ensure work is completed in a safe and responsible manner
• Handle and manipulate objects on a repetitive basis.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding and carry out simple one or two-step instructions.
• Keep work area clean, well-organized, and safe.
• Performs other tasks as assigned or requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Industry experience in scrap metal preferred.
• At least 2 years operating experience
• Basic understanding of hydraulic and electric systems
• Prior experience with hand and power tools, preferred.
• Ability to work inside or outside as required.
• Attention to detail and accuracy.
• Must be safety-oriented and exhibit safe work habits.
• Punctual and reliable; good attendance required.
• Good communication skills.
• Team-player
• Self-motivated and eager to learn new skills; must be willing to cross-train on other equipment.
• Ability to adhere to work schedule and follows through on challenges as they arise.
• Ability to adhere to Company policies and rules tht are set forth; promotes the Company's safety standards; works with a sense of honesty and trustworthiness.
• Basic math, reading and writing English skills are required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Frequently required to sit; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
• Specific vision includes close vision and ability to adjust focus.
• Standing, sitting, walking, squatting, bending, lifting, reaching, and grasping.
• Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate controls, hand and power tools.
• Lifts up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist level and able to carry such objects for at least 30 feet.
• Sitting and standing for extended period of time.
• Physically able to participate in sessions, presentations, and meetings.
• Move about a salvage yard.
• Outside work in the yard is where temperature and weather extremes (cold, hot, snow, rain) may be encountered.
• Work may take place in an industrial environment, with noise, dust and fumes.
• Noise level in the work environment can be moderate at times, hearing protection is provided by the Company at all times.
