About the Role:

The New York Times is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Content Data Products team. You will report to an Engineering Director and manage a team of engineers who partner with product and project managers, data scientists, newsroom along with other partners. This team builds systems that turn NYT's archive of publishing content into data products. Our teams and external partners will use these tools to obtain insights and build experiences based on NYT content.

This team sits within the Publishing group at the New York Times, which is responsible for the content management system for all of the Times. It empowers development teams to build and evolve experiences with speed and quality. This provides editors and creators with a unified and interconnected suite of tools they can use with confidence. The goal is to make the world's best journalism.

This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters. You can typically expect to come into the office 2 days/week.

Responsibilities:

Develop the Team: Manage a team of 6–9 backend engineers.

Promote a culture of collaboration, engineering excellence, and psychological safety.

Oversee Technical Strategy: Guide the team in developing high-throughput, low-latency services and pipelines for data delivery and warehousing. Guide decisions on architecture and technology selection

Build and Deliver: Collaborate with different teams to define roadmaps, plan sprints, and deliver impactful projects. Ensure the team's work is aligned with broader goals.

Ensure Operational Excellence: Lead the reliability, scalability, and performance of the team's services. Champion monitoring, alerting, and on-call practices to maintain high availability for our critical systems.

Collaborate Across Boundaries: Build relationships and coordinate projects across other teams and organizations to ensure successful outcomes. Represent the team in technical discussions and communicate technical challenges and risks.

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission.

Basic Qualifications:

2+ years of experience in an engineering management or people leadership role

5+ years of hands-on experience as a software engineer

Demonstrated technical leadership in the delivery of enterprise-scale software projects

Experience hiring, developing and retaining software engineers

Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure (AWS preferred)

Preferred Qualifications:

Leadership Delegation: Experience developing new talent and delegating complex projects to empower engineers to grow into technical owners

Technical Expertise: Experience with Golang, Python, Java or similar within event-driven architectures, and distributed systems at scale such as Spark or Flink

Data Expertise: Experience working with large-scale data storage and analysis tools such as Postgres, S3, Glue, and Athena

Collaboration: Experience working on projects with non-engineering partners (e.g., Data Science, Legal, External Partnerships)

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$152,000 $190,000 USD

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
