Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
This onsite Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood collection for in-house donors while supporting the safe and efficient handling, organization, and distribution of blood products and samples. The position plays a key role in maintaining compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), FDA regulations, ISO standards, HIPAA, and OSHA safety requirements, ensuring accurate documentation, proper inventory management, and reliable support for laboratory operations.
Responsibilities
- Log blood products upon receipt from outside facilities and ensure segments are delivered for testing in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures.
- Organize and reconcile blood products in the refrigerator to support optimal use and proper inventory rotation.
- Perform phlebotomy on in-house donors using appropriate techniques and equipment, including a 23-gauge butterfly needle.
- Prepare and manage the weekly phlebotomy schedule, including scheduling and notifying donors and arranging replacements for donors who are unable to keep their appointments.
- Assist in the distribution of collected blood samples to designated laboratories, ensuring accurate labeling and timely delivery.
- Support the maintenance of department equipment by following established departmental procedures.
- Maintain phlebotomy inventory and order supplies as needed to ensure uninterrupted operations.
- Assist with the shipment of samples and blood units to outside facilities in accordance with applicable procedures.
- Assist in the transport of red cell units between production areas when needed.
- Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned to support departmental goals.
- Create clear, legible written records within procedure-defined time frames in compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs).
- Maintain a neat, clean, and orderly work environment at all times.
- Meet or exceed achievement levels established for competency evaluations.
- Interact cooperatively and professionally with coworkers, supervisors, and staff from other departments, and respond constructively to direction from leadership.
- Adhere strictly to HIPAA requirements and applicable OSHA laboratory safety regulations, including those related to chemical hazards and bloodborne pathogens.
- Understand FDA regulations and ISO standards applicable to department operations and recognize the consequences of nonconformances.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of phlebotomy experience, including venipuncture and blood draws, preferably using a 23-gauge butterfly needle.
- Demonstrated experience performing phlebotomy in a laboratory or clinical setting.
- Laboratory experience, including handling, labeling, and processing blood samples.
- Proficiency in data entry and documentation with strong attention to accuracy and detail.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, and general computer literacy.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with donors and internal staff and for scheduling and coordinating donor appointments.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence clearly and accurately.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to calculate and interpret standard laboratory formulas.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form.
- Ability to solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certificate in Phlebotomy preferred.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications such as Excel, Word, Access, and Outlook preferred.
- Experience in blood banking or blood collection environments is a plus.
- Familiarity with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) is desirable.
- Customer service experience, particularly in a healthcare or donor-facing environment, is beneficial.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and patient information handling is advantageous.
- Experience with blood sample processing, including centrifuging, labeling, and preparing samples for analysis, is helpful.
- Experience in medical or patient care settings is a plus.
Work Environment
