Summary
The Electrical CAD Designer is a mid-level technical professional responsible for supporting the development of electrical engineering deliverables across a wide range of energy, infrastructure, and industrial projects. This role focuses on high-quality drafting, modeling, and documentation using industry-standard tools, with a strong emphasis on AutoCAD Electrical and the ability to adapt to other digital engineering platforms (Bentley, EPLAN).
The CAD Designer will produce a full range of electrical design deliverables, including single-line diagrams, wiring and control schematics, panel layouts, cable routing plans, and 3D models of electrical systems such as cable trays and conduit layouts. This role supports projects across power distribution as well as instrumentation, automation, and controls systems for different sectors and industries, including but not limited to industrial, oil and gas, public infrastructure, water, commercial, healthcare, and residential.
The individual will work closely with engineers and project teams to translate engineering designs into detailed drawings, support multidisciplinary coordination, and participate in digital delivery workflows such as CAD, BIM, and 3D modeling.
Job Responsibilities
Develop and maintain electrical design drawings and models, including:
Single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, panel schedules, and schematics
Wiring, termination, loop, and panel diagrams
Cable schedules, tray, and conduit layouts
Plot plans and electrical general arrangements.
Basic 3D layouts and routing (cable tray, conduit, equipment)
Support electrical design efforts across different service areas sectors and industries, including power distribution, instrumentation, automation, and controls.
Produce construction-ready drawings and documentation in accordance with project requirements, codes, and applicable standards.
Collaborate closely with engineers and project managers to interpret design intent and translate engineering design into actionable deliverables.
Assist in the development of electrical construction details and standard drawing libraries.
Perform drawing updates, redlines, as-builts, and document conversions as required for project delivery and digital engineering workflows.
Utilize AutoCAD Electrical as the primary design tool; support additional platforms such as EPLAN, Bentley, and 3D modeling tools (e.g., CadWorx) as needed.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, structural, mechanical) to ensure cohesive design integration.
Support quality control efforts by checking drawings for completeness, consistency, and adherence to standards.
Contribute to digital delivery initiatives including CAD/BIM standards, data management, and drawing modernization efforts.
Effectively collaborate in a remote/hybrid environment using modern communication and project collaboration tools.
Job Requirements
Associate’s degree or technical certification in Drafting, CAD Technology, Electrical Technology, or a related field preferred.
5–10 years of experience in electrical CAD design or drafting within engineering consulting, industrial, or infrastructure environments.
Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical (required).
Working knowledge or willingness to learn additional tools such as EPLAN, Bentley Electrical Tools, and 3D CAD platforms.
Experience producing a broad range of electrical deliverables, including schematics, panel layouts, wiring and termination diagrams, and physical layouts, demonstrating versatility beyond a single specialty.
Familiarity with fundamental electrical design concepts, including:
Low-voltage power distribution systems
Cable tray and conduit routing and layout
Instrumentation and control wiring practices
Protective device representation and coordination concepts
Development of electrical construction details and installation views
Understanding of applicable codes and standards (NEC, ANSI/IEEE and similar).
