Job Title: GO Fellow

Job Type: AmeriCorps

Location: State of Virginia

School Partners: Jefferson-Houston PreK-8 IB School (1501 Cameron St, Alexandria, VA 22314)

Start Date: Training begins on or about September 28th and in-person tutoring will begin on October 1st.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4pm

JOB SUMMARY

As an in-person tutor with GO Tutor Corps, you will play a critical role in supporting students’ academic success by delivering targeted, small-group instruction in Math and/or English Language Arts (ELA). In this 1,200-hour AmeriCorps service position, you will support students in grades 3–12, Monday through Friday during school hours (typically between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m), for the academic semester.

Tutors are embedded within school communities and support instruction in alignment with each school’s model:

Alexandria Schools

Support teachers within classrooms during small-group rotations in math and literacy

Lead pull-out small groups of 3–6 students focused on targeted instruction aligned to Standards of Learning (SOL) goals

Reinforce core instruction and support student progress on state assessments

Arlington Schools

Provide small-group academic support (typically 2–3 students) within school-based intervention settings, such as a library or designated intervention space

Deliver instruction using school-provided intervention materials in math and literacy

Support students identified for targeted academic intervention

Across all sites, tutors collaborate closely with teachers and instructional coaches to align instruction with student needs and school priorities. Following training, tutors are expected to independently facilitate small-group instruction, effectively use provided curricula and materials, and maintain organized, engaging learning environments. Through consistent, high-quality support, tutors contribute directly to students’ daily learning experiences and academic growth.

We are seeking dedicated, reliable tutors who are passionate about educational equity and committed to making a measurable impact on student achievement. Ideal candidates demonstrate professionalism and consistency, build strong relationships with students, adapt instruction to diverse learning needs, and engage learners through culturally responsive practices.

Tutors typically work with 3–4 students per session in a supportive learning environment, helping to strengthen core academic skills while fostering confidence and connection. This role is well-suited for individuals interested in education, mentorship, or youth development, including recent graduates and those exploring a pathway into teaching.

Tutoring schedules vary by school and may change based on partner school needs. Tutors will receive a preliminary schedule of up to 10 hours per week, with any adjustments communicated in advance by school leaders. Maintaining a minimum of 10 service hours per week is required to successfully complete the 100-hour AmeriCorps commitment. In weeks when tutoring hours are reduced due to school scheduling, tutors are expected to complete remaining service hours through additional school support duties, such as assisting with testing or preparing instructional spaces.
