Job Summary:
The Swing Shift Quality Control Inspector (QCI) is responsible for performing in-process and final inspections during the swing shift to ensure fabricated components meet project specifications, codes, and quality standards. This role supports continuous production during non-daytime hours while ensuring compliance with welding procedures and customer requirements.
Detailed Descriptions of Functions:
- Conduct in-process and final inspections of fabricated steel components, welds, and assemblies.
- Verify work meets applicable standards (AWS D1.1, ASME, AISC, or project-specific codes).
- Ensure compliance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and fabrication drawings.
- Review weld maps, inspect weld sizes, and check for visual defects using appropriate tools and gauges.
- Fit and visual checks for night crew.
- Communicate issues that arise at night with day shift to find a solution.
- Logweld logs and drawings into traveler. Fit and weld in spare time.
- Monitor welder workmanship, joint prep, and fit-up quality.
- Document inspection results, non-conformance reports (NCRs), and rework as required.
- Coordinate with day shift QA/QC for turnover, updates, and issues needing follow-up.
- Support and enforce safety protocols during inspections in the shop or field areas.
- Qualifications:
- 3+ years of experience in quality control in a steel fabrication or welding environment.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in fitting, welding, and metal fabrication.
- Working knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW).
- Familiarity with AWS, ASME, or AISC standards.
- Proficient in reading blueprints, weld symbols, and inspection documentation.
- Experience with inspection tools such as weld gauges, calipers, tape measures, and visual aids.
- Strong attention to detail and record-keeping.
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent certification preferred but not required.
Equipment & Safety Equipment used:
- Operate and maintain inspection tools and equipment, including visual inspection tools, NDT Equipment, and weld measurement devices.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Adhere strictly to all company and site-specific safety rules.
- Ensure proper lockout/tagout procedures are followed during inspections.
- Participate in all required safety briefings, drills, and training sessions.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions or incidents to site safety personnel.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, band, stoop, and crouch for extended periods of time (up to 8-10 hours per day).
- Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolding, and work at heights or in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds of equipment or materials.
- Tolerance to work in a variety of environments, including indoor/outdoor settings, high heat, cold, dust, or noisy conditions.
- Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for operating inspection tools and equipment.
Pay: $25.00 - $34.00 per hour
