Job Title: 5-Axis CNC Machinist / Operator

Job Description

This role focuses on setting up and operating 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machines to produce precision components for aerospace, space, military, and advanced manufacturing applications. You will use a variety of machine tools, cutting tools, and precision measuring instruments to ensure parts meet strict specifications and quality standards, while contributing to continuous improvement of machining processes.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate a variety of 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machines, cutters, and work-holding tools to produce precision parts according to specifications.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, portable CMM, and FARO arms.
  • Machine parts to exact specifications, ensuring proper selection and use of 5- and 3-axis machines for each job.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate basic and specialized machine tools to perform precision machining operations.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines following setup documentation.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed parts using precision instruments (micrometers, calipers, FARO arms, gauges) to verify conformance to customer requirements and check for defects.
  • Monitor machine feed rates and speeds during machining to maintain optimal performance and part quality.
  • Maintain machine tools and production equipment in proper operational condition through routine maintenance and timely adjustments.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine product requirements and confirm conformance.
  • Operate equipment to verify operational efficiency and make necessary adjustments to improve performance.
  • Diagnose machine tool malfunctions and determine appropriate adjustments or repairs.
  • Collaborate with engineering, supervisory, and inspection personnel to verify technical information and resolve machining issues.
  • Fit and assemble fixtures and cutters to manufacture or repair customer products.
  • Dispose of scrap and waste materials in accordance with company policies and environmental regulations.
  • Separate scrap, waste, and related materials for reuse, recycling, or proper disposal.
  • Evaluate machining procedures and recommend changes or modifications to improve efficiency and adaptability in line with Kaizen and continuous improvement practices.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Watch gauges, dials, and other indicators to ensure machines are working properly and safely.
  • Control the operations of equipment and systems during machining and related processes.
  • Conduct tests and inspections of products and processes to evaluate quality and performance.
  • Troubleshoot operating errors, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Assemble electromechanical or hydraulic systems as required for production or fixtures.
  • Assemble machine tools, parts, and fixtures to support production operations.
  • Disassemble equipment for maintenance or repair when necessary.
  • Install mechanical components in production equipment according to specifications.
  • Mount attachments and tools onto production equipment safely and accurately.
  • Move product using pallet jacks or forklifts to designated areas, following material handling procedures.
  • Inspect equipment for safety hazards using the 6S checklist and other safety protocols.
  • Verify calibration and offset alignment of production equipment to maintain accuracy.
  • Confirm certification status of inspection equipment before use.
  • Maintain production and processing equipment, including replacing worn components as needed.

Essential Skills

  • At least 6 months of machining experience in a production or job shop environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1–2 years of experience running 3-, 4-, and 5-axis numerical control machines preferred.
  • Ability to set up and operate 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC machines, including basic and specialized machine tools.
  • Proficiency with micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and other precision measuring instruments.
  • Experience with Fanuc-based controls and Haas controls for CNC machines.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong mathematics skills for calculating dimensions, tolerances, and machining parameters.
  • Active learning skills to apply new information to current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Active listening skills to understand instructions and feedback from colleagues and leadership.
  • Critical thinking skills to evaluate alternative solutions and approaches to machining challenges.
  • Effective learning strategies for mastering new processes, tools, and technologies.
  • Monitoring skills to assess performance of self, equipment, and processes, and take corrective action when needed.
