Job Summary
Under immediate direction and in compliance with standard policies, performs basic automotive and equipment repairs and services such as tire replacement, oil change, bulb replacement, brakes, suspension repairs, engine tune‑ups, air conditioning services, and basic manufacturer maintenance. Responds to field service calls, inputs service information into the fleet work management system, assists with shop cleaning and organization, supports special projects, and works inclement weather operations.
Essential Functions
- Perform Basic Services and Repairs (80%): Replace parts, tighten components, perform tire service, conduct inspections, and execute manufacturer‑specified preventative maintenance A & B and annual safety checks. Source parts, interpret job orders, document work, and support other mechanics with brakes, suspension, engine tune‑ups, and more.
- Provide On‑call Field Service (10%): Respond to field calls, survey equipment, perform diagnostics, determine shop versus tow, change or repair tires, replace batteries, and jump‑start vehicles.
- Provide Facility and Resource Management (5%): Salvage usable parts, dispose/recycle used parts, maintain shop inventory, notify parts staff, and store equipment.
- Clean and Maintain Shop Area (5%): Keep the shop clean and safe, assist co‑workers with sweeping, mopping, clearing clutter, cleaning tools, and storing tools in designated areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least six months of automotive repair experience or completion of a technical automotive or diesel technology training/certification program.
- Completion of mechanic competency classification test at level I within six months of hire.
- FEMA IC‑S 100, 552, and 700 within three months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- More than one year of automotive repair experience.
- ASE certification.
Driver's License Requirements
- Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.
Performance Requirements
Knowledge of:
- OSHA and safe working practices.
- Automotive vehicle and diesel equipment maintenance and preventative procedures.
- Proper disposal of used parts and equipment.
- Fleet work management system.
Ability to:
- Conduct multi‑point inspections and identify service needs.
- Perform tire rotations and services.
- Respond to service calls, diagnose field maintenance, and prepare vehicles for towing.
- Remove, tear down, rebuild, adjust, reinstall, align, and mesh automotive components.
- Communicate effectively with users, service writers, and technicians.
- Develop professional relationships across departments and externally.
- Maintain organization and attention to detail.
- Read and implement technical manuals, troubleshooting guides, and service updates.
- Write clear reports and emails.
- Make calculations and logical conclusions using fractions, percentages, ratios, and measurements.
- Use hand tools, diagnostic machines, calipers, micrometers, electrical and pneumatic power tools, A/C recovery machines, and other equipment.
- Operate office equipment including scanner, printer, copier, telephone, and computer with Microsoft Office.
- Utilize specialized software, time‑keeping, and fleet management systems.
Working Conditions
Primary Work Location:
Fleet Maintenance Shop.
Protective Equipment Required:
Steel‑toed shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves.
Environmental/Health and Safety Factors:
Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards, outdoor work, extreme temperatures, wetness, humidity, respiratory hazards, noise, vibration, mechanical, chemical, electrical, explosive, communicable diseases, and fire hazards.
Physical Demands:
Constant standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, balancing, bending, hearing, twisting, and talking; frequent kneeling, crawling; occasional sitting; heavy strength up to 150 pounds intermittently.
Mental Demands:
Time pressures, frequent task changes, irregular schedule/overtime, multitasking, teamwork, tedious or exacting work, noisy environment, occasional emergencies.
