Position Overview & Travel Expectations
This is a high-travel, high-autonomy leadership role with a home base in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While you will frequently deploy across the country to diagnose and fix equipment on-site (e.g., New Jersey, Arkansas, or Missouri), you must live within commuting distance of Grand Rapids or be willing to relocate here. When you are not deployed on the road, you are required to work regularly in-person at our Grand Rapids shop.
Note: Regular shop work and standard daily commuting to our Grand Rapids home base are not included as part of travel pay or per diem coverage.
Key Responsibilities
- Field Diagnostics & Leadership: Independently troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair advanced hydraulic systems, diesel engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and HVAC units under rugged field conditions.
- Specialized Shop & Fleet Maintenance: Execute routine, preventive, and major maintenance at our Grand Rapids shop. Maximize uptime for specialized drill rigs (Versa-Drill experience is a massive plus) and heavy support equipment (skid steers, excavators, front-end loaders, dozers).
- Schematics & Diagnostic Tools: Utilize schematics, OEM manuals, and diagnostic software to identify issues accurately. Perform component changeouts, seals, bearings, and shaft repairs.
- Fabrication & Welding: Conduct fabrication and welding tasks to modify or repair equipment components as needed to meet safety and operational standards.
- Remote Support: Communicate effectively with field crews to troubleshoot mechanical issues over the phone and determine if an emergency field deployment is necessary.
- Safety & Record Keeping: Maintain detailed service records, logs, and reports. Ensure all work is executed safely and efficiently, upholding high safety standards for multi-million dollar equipment with minimal supervision.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Location: Must reside within or be willing to relocate to the Grand Rapids, MI area for regular shop-based work.
- Technical Expertise: Proven experience as a Heavy Equipment or Diesel Mechanic with strong mechanical knowledge of diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
- Schematic Mastery: Absolute ability to read, interpret, and troubleshoot from complex hydraulic and electrical schematics.
- The Right Grit: Willingness to work long hours in extreme, unpredictable weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow). Physical capability to lift and carry heavy objects and execute heavy lifting procedures safely.
- Travel Flexibility: Ability and willingness to travel extensively nationwide (nearly 100% field travel during peak deployment windows), often for a week or more at a time. If a drill rig breaks, you must go to it to fix it – anywhere throughout the US (e.g., Oregon, Missouri, New Jersey, Arkansas)
- Tools & Equipment: Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, welding/soldering equipment, and diagnostic software. Experience working with OEM parts (Versa-Drill) is highly desirable.
