Job Title: Phlebotomist (Float) - Patient Service CenterJob Description

This phlebotomist position supports a high-volume Patient Service Center and sister locations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling, and maintaining smooth workflow in a fast-paced lab environment. The role includes floating between designated sites as coverage is needed, assisting with troubleshooting, participating in training, and recommending workflow improvements while delivering courteous and clear communication to patients of all ages, including pediatric patients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal specimens, using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients, ensuring they understand the process and feel at ease.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy before and after collection.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against physician scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy prior to processing.
  • Package specimens for transport, following all required procedures to preserve specimen quality during transit.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following protocol-specific handling instructions.
  • Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
  • Update and maintain accurate patient information in the system as required.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Attend and complete annual department trainings and any required refresher courses.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Assist in troubleshooting workflow issues and participate in training activities to support continuous process improvement.
  • Float between the primary Patient Service Center and designated sister sites to provide coverage as needed.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team within the Patient Service Center and contribute to a positive, efficient work environment.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including venipuncture and specimen collection.
  • Ability to use straight needles and butterfly needles confidently and safely.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of overall relevant experience in a clinical or laboratory environment.
  • Strong attention to detail when labeling, handling, and processing specimens.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and protocols precisely.
  • Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures and respond to inquiries.
  • Ability to work with patients of all ages, including pediatric patients.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a Patient Service Center or similar outpatient lab office environment.
  • Comfort working with a daily volume of approximately 30 to 50 blood draws.
  • Experience handling multiple specimen types, including urine and fecal samples.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and safety standards, including OSHA and DEP requirements.
  • Ability to float between multiple locations and adapt quickly to different site workflows.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and maintain accurate records.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced setting.

Work Environment

The role is based primarily in a Patient Service Center (lab office) located in Tarrytown, with the expectation to float to sister sites in New Rochelle and Yonkers as coverage needs arise. Training for this position typically lasts up to two weeks and takes place at a Patient Service Center in Yonkers, New York. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a 30-minute lunch break, and alternating Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The environment is fast-paced and high volume, with an average of 30 to 50 patient draws per day.
