We are seeking a skilled and motivated Heavy Diesel Truck Mechanic to join our team. The ideal Heavy Diesel Truck Mechanic must be very versatile with all aspects of repairing heavy diesel trucks and trailers and have extensive mechanical experience. This role requires experience with heavy lifting, diagnosing and repairing complex mechanical and electrical issues, welding, and tire services.

Heavy Diesel Truck Mechanic Job description

  • Ideally 2+ years relevant Heavy Diesel Truck Mechanic experience. Must have experience and knowledge of electronics and computer diagnostics troubleshooting. Experience servicing Mack and Kenworth trucks a plus.
  • Conduct inspections utilizing fleet automotive diagnostics and electrical experience to identify problems before they become critical failures. Must have knowledge of DOT rules and regulations.
  • Performs routine maintenance checks and adjustments on such things as fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches; changes filter and oil, and lubricates vehicles and motor driven equipment.
  • Services, diagnoses, repairs and maintains tandem drive axles and heavy duty mutli-axle suspensions, both conventional steel or air springs.
  • Tunes diesel engines, services valves, fuel filter and turbo charger, and pressure checks fuel filters, adjust injector heights, fuel racks, governors, etc.
  • Diagnoses problems, disassembles units, repairs or replace parts, and reassembles units in the following systems: Brakes, Cooling, Drive, Electrical, Exhaust and Emissions Control, Heating and Air Conditioning, Hydraulic, Air, Steering and Suspension System and Coupling Devices.
  • Assists in the fabrication, modifies, and installs special equipment or replacement parts using welders, torch sets, plasma cutter and metal cutting saws.
  • Keeps tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
  • Performs inspection of MTS vehicle or equipment to ensure either is considered operable and safe.
  • Works efficiently to insure most economical use of time and equipment.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment. Reports to appropriate Manager, any defects or repairs needed for the safe operation of the equipment.
  • Repair or replace tires/rims on trucks/trailers.
  • Drives MTS vehicles by following all state and local traffic rules and company regulations.
  • Follows accident procedures if an accident occurs. Reports any incidents to appropriate personnel.
  • Performing all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Performing miscellaneous assigned duties and works the hours necessary to complete assigned jobs.
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possess a driver's license with excellent driving record. Possession of a CDL license is a plus.
  • ASE Certificate a plus.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, physical, fitness test and drug test.
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving.
  • Knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair of maintenance of motor vehicles and equipment, with skill in operation of vehicles, common hand and power tools, gas and electric welding equipment, Jacks and hoist, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, telephone, and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of safety issues in the use of tools, equipment, and supplies used in the repair of motorized vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to safely drive various MTS vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions. Ability to read manuals and schematics.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to make independent judgments which have moderate impacts on the organization.
