Job Title: Medical Assistant Float

Job Description

The Medical Assistant Float provides high-quality, team-based patient care in a pediatric-focused environment, supporting both clinical and administrative functions under the direct supervision of clinicians. This role combines traditional medical assistant duties with laboratory responsibilities, including performing phlebotomy and a variety of laboratory testing procedures. The Floater works across multiple offices, supporting either the medical assistant role or a dedicated laboratory role, to promote health and wellness in a safe, friendly, and patient-centered setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide team-based patient care under the direct supervision of a clinician in a pediatric-focused setting.
  • Support clinicians and care management teams in assessing patients and maintaining chronic disease management.
  • Perform all assigned clinical duties, including rooming patients, taking vital signs, and assisting with examinations and procedures as directed by the clinician.
  • Perform all required laboratory testing procedures in accordance with established protocols and quality standards.
  • Conduct phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
  • Accurately report laboratory results to the appropriate healthcare clinician in a timely manner.
  • Alert the healthcare clinician of any critical or out-of-range laboratory values and document all critical reports according to policy.
  • Utilize electronic medical records (EMR) systems to document patient information, laboratory results, and clinical activities accurately and efficiently.
  • Apply medical terminology appropriately when communicating with clinicians, care teams, and documenting in the EMR.
  • Provide patient-facing support with a professional, friendly, and compassionate demeanor, especially when working with pediatric patients and their families.
  • Follow all clinical and laboratory safety protocols and infection control procedures to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Float between multiple clinical sites according to the weekly schedule, reliably reporting to only one assigned site per day.
  • Collaborate with other medical assistants, laboratory staff, and clinicians to ensure smooth patient flow and high-quality care across locations.
  • Maintain current certifications, including Medical Assistant credentials (or equivalent experience) and Basic Life Support (BLS), and comply with all continuing education or competency requirements.
  • Support administrative tasks as needed, such as scheduling assistance, documentation, and coordination of care, to enhance overall clinic efficiency.

Essential Skills

  • Medical Assistant Diploma or Certification required, OR a minimum of 3 years of medical assistant experience in lieu of formal certification.
  • Active Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Active and valid driver’s license required to travel between assigned clinical sites.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and a strong desire or passion for working in pediatrics.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems for clinical documentation and laboratory result reporting.
  • Solid understanding of medical terminology for accurate communication and documentation.
  • Competence in performing phlebotomy, including venipuncture, finger sticks, and heel sticks.
  • Ability to perform laboratory testing procedures accurately and follow established protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when documenting and reporting laboratory results, especially critical or out-of-range values.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team-based care model, collaborating closely with clinicians and care management teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for patient-facing interactions in a pediatric environment.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to float between multiple sites within the designated geographic area.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Medical Assistant Certification is strongly preferred when not meeting the experience equivalency.
  • Pediatric experience is preferred and will be considered a strong asset.
  • Experience working in a patient-facing, outpatient clinical or laboratory setting is beneficial.
  • Comfort using computers throughout the workday to operate EMR and related clinical systems.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to different clinic locations, teams, and workflows.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively in a busy clinical environment.

Work Environment

This is a patient-facing role in an indoor clinical setting, primarily serving pediatric patients and their families.
