JOB SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Fire Captain, the primary duties include aircraft rescue and firefighting, first responder EMT and Paramedic functions, and building fire and rescue responses to ensure safety of passengers, airport personnel, and property.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drive aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles to incidents.
- Transport equipment and personnel swiftly, ensuring adequate water, chemicals, and supplies.
- Operate apparatus, locate water supply, monitor pressure, calculate friction loss, and establish fire streams.
- Lay and connect hose lines; operate handheld and stationary nozzles; use portable fire extinguisher.
- Maintain and operationally test assigned vehicle and related equipment.
- Maintain basic life support equipment, check medical supply inventory, and report malfunctions.
- Inspect fire apparatus daily for radio, pumps, gauges, engine, brakes, and safety systems.
- Perform salvage operations cleaning debris, fuel, and chemical spills.
- Attend trainings on airport facilities, ARFF operations, runways, roads, alternative routes, hydrants, and fire hydrant locations; maintain certifications.
- Complete and file reports on fires, accidents, rescue operations, hazardous conditions, training, vehicle work orders, inspections, and fire alarms.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks for station, quarters, and grounds, including inventory control.
RESPONDING TO EMERGENCIES
- Act as first medical professionals at scenes of accidents or other emergencies.
- Assess patients’ condition and determine appropriate treatment.
- Provide advanced life support (e.g., CPR) and other emergency care.
- Transport patients safely to medical facilities.
- Document care, observations, and treatments.
- Maintain, inventory, and replace medical supplies; clean equipment.
- Communicate with patients, families, and hospital staff.
- Teach first aid to the public.
- Apply Emergency Medical Technical Operations including patient packaging, extrication, splinting, hemorrhage control, airway control, oxygen administration, and Advanced Life Support techniques such as IV access, medication administration, electrical therapies, advanced airway procedures (intubation, RSI, cricothyrotomy), chest decompression, and IO applications.
- Perform and interpret ECGs, including 12‑lead; transmit findings electronically to emergency departments.
- Conduct emergency rescues of trapped patients and execute medical procedures under challenging conditions.
- Insert peripheral and external IV catheters; obtain vital signs; perform head‑to‑toe assessments per medical‑director approved protocols.
- Operate AEDs confidently.
- Operate emergency vehicles in emergency and non‑emergency modes, obey state laws; maintain good driving record.
OTHER JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct station tours and provide public information about department functions.
- Perform related duties as required.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED
All Fire Department vehicles, firefighting equipment, training materials, emergency medical equipment (basic life support), communication equipment, and computers.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience as an Aircraft Rescue Firefighter – preferred.
- Live Fire Burn experience to comply with FAR Part 139 – preferred.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – preferred.
- Licenses and
Certifications:
- Valid State of Florida Fire Fighter Certification.
- Valid NREMT or State Paramedic Certification.
- Valid State of Florida Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record.
- Other Requirements:
- Pass a physical fitness test or provide CPAT result within last six months.
- Meet minimum qualifications for employment as a firefighter in Florida (Statutes 633.412).
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of aircraft & vehicle extraction procedures.
- Knowledge of firefighting principles, airport layout, and FAA regulations.
- Knowledge of departmental SOPs and SMAA operations.
- Knowledge of mechanics, hydraulics, preventive maintenance of equipment.
- Knowledge of emergency medical treatment, life support, CPR, EMT/Paramedic procedures.
- Knowledge of hazardous materials response.
- Ability to perform strenuous work under adverse conditions (heat, smoke, noise, etc.).
- Ability to recognize danger and act promptly.
- Ability to work at heights, in close quarters, and with SCBA.
- Ability to use two‑way communication equipment.
- Strong oral communication skills.
- Drive apparatus in all weather and emergency conditions.
- React quickly and make sound judgments under pressure.
- Develop and implement training programs.
- Physical Requirements: Sufficient fitness to work while wearing protective equipment and SCBA.
- Mental Requirements: Ability to function under high mental stress and hazardous environmental conditions.
