As a Staff Safety Standards Engineer you will play a critical role in shaping the safety and regulatory standards that govern autonomous trucking, working directly with external stakeholders and organizations to shape how this technology is defined, evaluated, and approved.
This individual contributor role combines deep regulatory fluency, safety standards expertise, and cross-functional influence. You'll partner across engineering, operations, legal, and government relations teams, while engaging directly with regulators, standards bodies, and industry coalitions. Your work will help shape the future of autonomous vehicle safety and ensure Aurora's systems are designed, built, and deployed in alignment with evolving U.S. and international standards.
In this role, you will
Lead development, implementation, and conformance strategies of safety standards and guidelines for self-driving vehicle deployment
Serve as subject-matter expert and external representative with regulators, industry coalitions, and standards bodies
Represent Aurora’s safety approach to customers and our OEM partners
Monitor, analyze, and anticipate regulatory changes across U.S. and international frameworks related to the safety of Aurora products; translate findings into actionable guidance for product engineering, and operational teams
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or a related technical field
10+ years in safety, compliance, regulatory, or related engineering roles within transportation or an adjacent safety critical industry, (e.g. aviation, nuclear, medical devices, oil and gas, etc.)
Expert knowledge of automotive safety policy, regulation, and standards
Thorough understanding of product development life cycles that incorporate safety
Proven ability to develop, negotiate, and communicate safety policy, technical analyses, and compliance information to diverse audiences (regulators, engineers, legal, executives)
Demonstrated ability to manage complex, cross-functional programs and external stakeholder relationships
Experience representing an organization with regulators, standards development organizations, and industry coalitions
Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate technical findings into clear safety policy or recommendations
Effective communication and collaboration skills across all levels
Desirable Qualifications
Direct experience with automotive, ADAS or autonomous vehicle compliance, standards, or certification
Familiarity with homologation, type approval, or certification processes for light-duty or commercial vehicles
Exposure to international regulatory frameworks (e.g., UNECE)
Experience working within or alongside a federal agency, regulatory body, or public-private partnership
Familiarity with safety challenges of ML-based systems
Advanced degree in a relevant technical or regulatory discipline
The base salary range for this position is $171,000 - $247,000 per Year . Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
