Job Summary And Qualifications

Job Summary: The Phlebotomist is responsible for the safe drawing of blood on children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients using accepted technical and aseptic standards and following the policies and procedures of Dominion Hospital. Prints daily specimen labels, check all request sheets that may accompany specimens for correct labeling. Responsible for Professional growth and identification of opportunities to improve the delivery of services to the patient population.

Specific Job Functions

  • Demonstrates Aseptic Technique
  • Consistently follows patient safety initiative
  • Follows correct protocol for sharps disposal
  • Chooses appropriate equipment based on site & age of client
  • Can process specimens and use Meditech to send specimens correctly
  • Milieu management: is able to anticipate escalation & take appropriate action
  • Maintains appropriate boundaries
  • Reports unsafe environmental conditions and initiates correction
  • Displays professionalism when dealing with patients, staff & clinicians
  • Reports changes in safety level or physical condition to the charge nurse

Qualification Requirements: Licensure: None required Certifications: Basic Life Support certification through American Red Cross for Healthcare Providers required upon hire (AHA and military certifications accepted), and Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) as a part of the general hospital orientation. Phlebotomy certification is preferred Registrations: None required Experience: 1-3 years Phlebotomy experience. Experience with specimen collection, venipuncture equipment, safety precautions.
