Summary

Possesses a working knowledge of molecular and cell biology with experience in the performance and application of techniques used in clinical molecular diagnostic testing including DNA and RNA isolation, conventional and real-time PCR, quantitative and qualitative reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR), automated DNA sequencing and fragment analysis, restriction enzyme digestion, gel electrophoresis, other molecular diagnostic techniques and general assay validation and quality control/quality assurance. Experience with in house molecular diagnostic assay design and development, including design of primers and probes, and assay validation, quality control, quality assurance, and/or troubleshooting, is desirable. The ability to follow the standard protocol and independently perform laboratory routine testing in the area of molecular pathology is required.

In addition to the above, the individual will be expected to maintain equipment and records; perform quality control and quality assurance activities, participate in the evaluation of new procedures and equipment; provide training for technologists, residents, fellows, and other medical staff; work efficiently in a computerized environment; assist with the functions required to maintain the smooth operation of the department such as clerical duties, reagent preparation, and inventory control; and write and revise technical procedures.

The molecular pathology technologist requires minimal oversight to complete assigned tasks. Possesses superior organizational skills and is capable of working independently.

This position will work under the scientific direction of the Medical Director and Coordinator of Molecular Pathology.

Position Highlights

  • Specimen handling: Receives, accessions, and processes blood, and a variety of other human source specimens, for clinical analysis.
  • Molecular Pathology Testing: Performs and reports tests according to standard operating procedures as established in the clinical molecular laboratory. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of molecular testing theory and scientific principles, routine testing procedures, and instrument operation and maintenance requirements, as they apply to molecular testing.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Master’s degree in Molecular Biology.
  • ASCP certified.
  • Possesses superior organizational skills, and is capable of working independently.

Responsibilities

  • Specimen handling: Receives, accessions, and processes blood, and a variety of other human source specimens, for clinical analysis.
  • Accurately verifies orders and enters specimen collection information into the laboratory computer system.
  • Consistently complies with specimen rejection criteria. Accepts only suitable specimens for analysis. Follows established policies for notification and documentation of unacceptable specimens. Accurately labels all specimens received in accordance with established policies.
  • Demonstrates a thorough working knowledge of the laboratory computer system order entry and specimen accessioning functions, including a sound working knowledge of data entry and specimen requirements.
  • Demonstrates the analytical ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems related to specimen collection and processing.
  • Molecular Pathology Testing: Performs and reports tests according to standard operating procedures as established in the clinical molecular laboratory. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of molecular testing theory and scientific principles, routine testing procedures, and instrument operation and maintenance requirements, as they apply to molecular testing.
  • Consistently follows departmental procedures for test performance in order to ensure accurate testing results.
  • Consistently reports results within established turn around times. Is able to prioritize and organize workflow in order to meet turn around time requirements.
  • Thoroughly reviews all work prior to release of patient data, in order to prevent clerical errors and amended reports, generating no more than 2 amended reports due to clerical errors annually.
  • Always follows established policies and procedures related to quality control requirements and acceptability of data. Never reports patient results if QC is not within acceptable limits.
  • Performs and documents preventive maintenance as scheduled in a thorough, careful manner.
