AMT is an ISO 9001 certified precision machine shop located in the Des Moines area. We provide milling, turning, waterjet cutting, and fabrication services. We are open 4 days a week (Mon-Thurs), in 10 hour shifts.
This position is for first shift (6am-4:30pm).
Summary
The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC Lathes (and Mills when necessary) to cut materials (such as metal or plastic) according to specifications, blueprints, and/or work orders. The operator ensures efficient production while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Set-up and Operation:
- Read and interpret engineering blueprints, specifications, and work orders to determine material requirements and cutting sequences.
- Select, load, and secure appropriate materials into the lathe or mill.
- Program parts complete with G-Code and Mastercam software when necessary.
- Set up and adjust cutting tools, fixtures, clamps and other tooling necessary to perform the work order.
- Load and execute CNC programs; make necessary adjustments to machine controls (e.g., speed, feed rate, depth of cut) to ensure proper material cutting.
- Quality Control:
- Inspect finished materials for conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments (e.g., calipers, micrometers, etc.).
- Perform basic troubleshooting and make minor corrections to offset dimensional errors.
- Document inspection results and maintain detailed production logs.
- Machine and inspect tolerances within +/-0.0002”.
- Maintenance and Safety:
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on the mill or lathe, including cleaning, lubrication, and basic repairs.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, including wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required. Vocational or technical training in machine operation or manufacturing is a plus.
- Experience: 10 years minimum operating CNC Lathes
- Skills:
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Very strong in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and geometric tolerances.
- Very strong understanding of G-Code (M-Code programming is a plus).
- Must be capable of programming most parts complete.
- Experience using precision measuring tools.
- Experience machining stainless steel (specifically 303 & 304).
- Strong understanding of live tooling, dual spindle/dual turret, through spindle constraints, and other lathe specific machine capabilities/issues.
- Basic understanding of CAD/CAM software.
- Basic understanding of Mazatrol conversational programming is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive motions.
- Must be able to lift and move materials up to 50 pounds.
- Manual dexterity and good eyesight are required for operating controls and inspecting parts.
Pay: $28.00 - $34.00 per hour
