Job Title: Classroom Site Substitute

Starting Date: Immediately

Position Type: Full‑Time

Location: Assigned School

Term of Employment: In accordance with current school calendar

Reports To: Building Principal/Ed Serv

Summary

Responsible for coverage of classroom on a flexible schedule for teacher absences. Familiar with the elementary grade program and a class environment; prepared to engage students in a favorable learning environment and interested in personal growth; establishes effective rapport with pupils; motivates pupils to develop skills; attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in accordance with each pupil’s ability; establishes good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Substitute Teacher Certification
  • Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Ability to read and follow instruction
  • Ability to collaborate and cooperate as a team member

Preferred Qualifications

  • BA degree
  • BA degree in Education
  • Training in classroom management and managing student behavior
  • Experience working with pre‑K to 8th grade students
  • Experience working in a public school setting

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist and/or implement lesson plans and instructional materials as provided; utilize individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil and best utilize available classroom time.
  • Follow current schedules, lesson plans and seating charts as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of each student’s record.
  • Establish and maintain lines of communication with students and parents on a regular basis; communicate with parents to discuss pupils’ progress and particular needs.
  • Seek assistance of specialists or district resource persons to ascertain learning difficulties and appropriate services.
  • Maintain an effective learning atmosphere through functional displays, bulletin boards and interest centers under the direction of the site principal.
  • Select and requisition instructional aids and materials; maintain required inventory records.
  • Implement lesson plans assigned by the teacher; instruct assigned classes; report for duty on time; supervise pupils in out‑of‑classroom activities.
  • Establish and maintain management and control of students in the classroom.
  • Develop and explain rules for classroom discipline and consistently maintain discipline.
  • Takes reasonable precautions to protect students’ safety, welfare and district property.
  • Disciplines students in a fair and impartial manner following district policies.
  • Maintain professional ethics and attend required staff meetings and trainings.
  • Assist in implementing policies, regulations and procedures established by the governing board, district administration and unit school principal.
  • Assist other personnel as may be required to support their work activities.
  • Direct student workers, volunteers, etc. to maximize efficiency and meet work requirements.
  • Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students and adhering to Education Code.
  • Perform other duties and assume responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent/Designee.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with board policy or evaluation of professional personnel.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret education materials; write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondence; effectively present information and respond to questions from teachers, students, administration, and the community; communicate aims and/or objectives to students in a well‑planned, organized manner using clear and precise language.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference; apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Physical Demands

The job requires speaking and hearing; sitting extended periods, moving between locations, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, holding, grasping, climbing; occasionally lifting up to 25 pounds; requires vision abilities for close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and adjustment.

Work Environment

Primarily indoor, temperature controlled; occasional outdoor periods; noise level moderate.
