Position Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Senior Accountant to join our public accounting team. This role involves managing complex accounting tasks, ensuring compliance with nonprofit and for-profit regulations, and providing strategic financial guidance to mission-driven organizations and emerging businesses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead and manage accounting engagements for nonprofit clients and for profit clients.
  • Prepare and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit-specific standards (e.g., FASB ASC 958).
  • Assist clients with budgeting, grant tracking, and fund accounting.
  • Ensure compliance with IRS regulations, including preparation and review of Form 990 and related filings.
  • Provide advisory services on internal controls, financial policies, and best practices for nonprofit financial management.
  • Supervise and mentor junior staff, reviewing work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintain strong client relationships through regular communication and proactive support.
  • Stay current on changes in nonprofit accounting standards and regulations.
  • Prepare financial statements, e.g. monthly and quarterly financial reports, monthly forecasts to the Management Team and summarizing current and projected financial position
  • · Execute month end and quarterly closing (e.g. balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements)
  • · Prepare payroll and expense allocations across functional areas, grants, or programs
  • · Prepare and update account schedules and bank reconciliations
  • Analyzing and reconcile general ledger accounts and investment transactions in conjunction with preparing monthly reports for management
  • · Communicate with clients to address any financial concerns
  • Produce financial data for the management team upon request and assisting with other special accounting projects from time to time
  • Perform analysis of operations on a monthly basis
  • Developing budgets and forecast reports
  • Preparing corporate tax filings and address any tax questions
  • Research and implementing new accounting standards and tax regulations applicable and/or advantageous to companies within the portfolio
  • Work with client funders, prepare billings, and prepare grant financial reports
  • Research and implementation of tax code requirements and OMB circulars
  • Work with client management to prepare financial responses and budgets for proposals and funding opportunities.
  • Review grants for conditions, restrictions and revenue recognition
  • Attends management and board meetings as requested
  • Analyze business segments and assist in making business decisions.
  • Ensure each client in the assigned portfolio is audit ready and work directly with auditors.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA Preferred
  • Construction Accounting Experience a plus
  • Non-Profit Accounting Experience is a big plus.
  • Minimum of 4–6 years of public accounting experience, with at least 2 years working with nonprofit organizations(a plus).
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, including fund accounting and donor restrictions.
  • Experience with nonprofit and for profit audit procedures and financial reporting.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, or similar).
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines effectively.
  • Familiarity with grant compliance and federal funding requirements (e.g., Uniform Guidance).
  • Experience with nonprofit board reporting and strategic financial planning.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit tax issues and charitable registration requirements.
  • Strong GAAP knowledge and experience
  • Construction experience a plus
  • Strong organization, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Strong computer aptitude, which includes expertise with Microsoft Excel and Word as well as experience with accounting software and general ledgers
  • Analytical skills with particular attention to detail
