Certified Medical Assistant
The Certified Medical Assistant provides direct, age‑specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the direction of the physician.
Licensure and Certification
Required for hire and ongoing employment:
- Current Medical Assistant Certification through a recognized national professional association such as the American Association of Medical Assistants, the American Medical Technologists, The National Association of Healthcare Professions, the American Registry of Medical Assistants, or the National Healthcare Association.
Experience
Required:
- One (1) year of medical assistant work experience within the last three (3) years if not a graduate of a medical assistant program.
- No work experience if individual is a graduate of a medical assistant program.
- Previous experience using a personal computer and various software applications, including Microsoft, e‑mail, etc.
- Demonstrated experience utilizing strong organizational, problem‑solving, communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred:
- Two (2) to three (3) years of previous experience as a Certified Medical Assistant.
- Previous experience in an academic health care environment.
Education / Training
- Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: Graduation from a Medical Assisting training program from an accredited program of study such as the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
Independent Actions
- Functions under direction of a licensed independent practitioner, manager and/or RN in providing patient care, emotional support, and problem solving; all in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policy/procedure.
- Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor for time/schedule changes; legal issues; directed care which deviates from standard; and identify educational resources to meet developmental needs.
- Job duties may include handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.
Additional Position Requirements
- Certified Medical Assistants work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific Nurse Manager/Practice Manager.
- Schedules, including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet clinic requirements and/or as needed.
- Age specific groups served: All.
Physical, Mental and Emotional Requirements
- Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs.; prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, other), reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive).
- Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speak clearly, write legibly, reading, logical thinking.
- Emotional: Fast pace environment, able to handle multiple priorities, able to adapt to frequent changes.
