About the Role

The Express Desk is looking for a general assignment reporter who can deliver on major breaking news stories in the West Coast and the Pacific region, as well as the delightful, viral stories that are the desk's hallmark. This sprawling, dynamic region is home to tens of millions of people, major industries and military facilities that cover East Asia, making it fertile ground for a reporter with wide-ranging curiosity and a high news metabolism.

You will explore regional topics including affordability, homelessness and extreme weather like earthquakes , tsunamis and wildfires , and trending stories that appeal to a broad U.S. and international audience.

You will work night or weekend shifts as news demands, with the expectation of developing, reporting and writing multiple stories per week or otherwise contributing to major reporting efforts across the newsroom, including live coverage. This role will suit someone who has a deep knowledge of California or Hawaii, can build relationships across departments and time zones and is a nimble self-starter who can tackle many topics.

This is a permanent position and the standard work schedule is five days a week, including at least one weekend day.

Responsibilities:

Report on major breaking news stories and collaborate with colleagues in different departments and time zones to ensure seamless coverage

Follow events and trends to identify news and feature stories and broader areas worthy of coverage in the Pacific region

Experiment with storytelling and new formats

Stay updated on audience strategies to reach new readers across platforms

Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

You will report to an Express editor.

Basic Qualifications:

5+ years' experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization

Deep knowledge of and sources in California or Hawaii

Professional experience reporting on major breaking news with an established track record of writing clearly and accurately

The ability to work fast on deadline, handle evolving storylines and write about new topics with authority

Clear, straightforward writing with a high standard of usage, grammar and evocative language

Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and share credit with colleagues

An established track record of news reporting, writing clearly and with style, and with a grasp of New York Times style guidelines

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated creativity in identifying and developing news features with a strong appeal to digital readers

Familiar with a variety of story forms, including insightful live updates, takeaways that summarize complex events, explainers off the news, tick-tocks, timelines and more

A desire to learn new tools and formats — and an interest in shaping them for the future

A reader-focused outlook that seeks to serve the interests of curious digital audiences

An interest in driving the evolution of news coverage in the digital age, imagining new ways to tell stories and solving problems collaboratively

Fluency with multiple languages

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$113,270.67 $125,000 USD

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
