POSITION SUMMARY:

  • Coordinate and supervise landscape projects, planning the landscape design, scheduling work, and supervising work crews
  • Ensure that landscaping projects are completed on time and meet supervisor expectations.
  • Train and oversee landscape workers and ensure that they are following company policies and procedures
  • Perform hands-on tasks such as planting, mowing, pruning, and trimming.

DUTIES:

  • Lead by example & performs general garden and grounds maintenance in conjunction with the other employees, i.e.; tree pruning, pruning, weeding, transplanting, fertilizing, pest control, irrigation repair, and all other tasks involved in the daily upkeep of an ornamental garden.
  • Must ensure that the high standards appropriate for the Mount Washington SRF garden are maintained.
  • Take on specialized, independent projects as assigned by the Garden Department Supervisor and follow through to completion.
  • Consult daily with Garden Supervisor to assess and evaluate the work to be performed each day.
  • Interfaces with the Maintenance Department on projects that involve both departments.
  • Relay information and instructions to other Gardeners in English and potentially in Spanish as directed by the Garden Department Supervisor.
  • Ensure all gardeners comply with supervisor directives in order to maximize team performance.
  • Prioritize work effectively
  • Potentially oversees tree-trimming crew when Garden Supervisor is not available.
  • Oversee regularly scheduled plant fertilization and monitor other gardeners in proper application dependent on conditions.
  • Ensure Garden Department volunteers are performing tasks in accordance with supervisor directives.
  • Interact in a cordial and harmonious fashion with Garden Department volunteers.
  • Provide valid and useful input and opinions on garden design.
  • Preparation and application of fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
  • Adherence to the use of equipment and chemicals in accordance with all precautions and directions.
  • Installation and repair of hardscape such as small retaining walls and pathways on property.
  • Maintain diverse plantings of trees, flowers, vines, perennials, grasses, succulents, and various other flora.
  • Water and care for plants in accordance with the appropriate schedule and transplant annual flowers as needed.
  • Prune shrubs and trees as necessary.
  • Repair and maintain irrigation lines, spray heads, and manual/electric valves.
  • Hedge trimming and hillside brush cleaning.
  • Cleaning and clearing of debris in storm water drains, drainage ditches and culverts.
  • Safe operation of all power equipment (blowers, mowers, weed whackers, chain saws, electric pruners, tractor, sweeper etc.).
  • Adherence to all safety equipment requirements during any and all usage of power tools or when necessary to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Fluent in Spanish (optional but preferred).
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to understand complex instructions.
  • Ability to offer strong, educated opinions - based on experience - as to how a plant will perform in any given area.
  • Must be a team player willing to collaborate
  • Specified knowledge of and familiarity with the cultivation of plants.
  • Ability to use and maintain a variety of power tools, including but not limited to chain saws, blowers, mowers, weed whackers and electric and gas pruners.
  • Must be competent in the operation of hand tools used in the performance of daily garden operations.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Honor and maintain a strict level of confidentiality.
  • Responsible to follow SRF's policies and established processes.
  • Other position-related tasks, as assigned.

Minimum 3 to 5 years working in an advanced level gardening/landscaping role. Knowledge of plants, trees, and shrubs

  • Minimum 2 year working in a foreman or supervisor position overseeing other gardeners.
  • Able to work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Excellent problem solving, communication and leadership skills. Is in charge of overseeing the work of Garden Department employees and volunteers.
  • In depth knowledge of proper tree pruning techniques.
  • Makes minor decisions regarding garden design and appearance when necessary to increase efficiency.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions in English and communicate those instructions to others.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to interface with tree trimming and brush maintenance crews from outside organizations as directed by the Garden Supervisor
  • Good physical condition has the ability to stoop, bend, dig, rake, climb hills, walk long distances for extended periods of time, and lift moderate (occasionally heavy) loads, up to 75 lbs.
  • Ability to make and oversee irrigation installation and repairs.
  • Ability to trim trees large trees up to 100 feet but usually less than 65 feet in height.
