Position: Special Education Teacher with Department Chair Addenda
Job Summary
Special Education teachers plan and provide learning experiences for students with disabilities, including cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities, in a variety of educational settings. The role requires a valid Alaska educator certificate and involves collaboration with parents, staff, and district administration to support IEP needs.
Job Requirements
- Valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education.
- Evidence of content knowledge in the content area of this position.
- Ken Ken kindergarten through 3rd grade class teachers must meet requirements for the Alaska Reads Act.
Preferred:
Experience working with special education students and collaborating to support IEP needs.
Essential Job Functions
- Describe philosophy of education and demonstrate its relationship to practice.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
- Teach students with respect for individual and cultural characteristics.
- Know the teacher's content area and how to teach it.
- Facilitate, monitor, and assess student learning.
- Create and maintain a learning environment in which all students are actively engaged.
- Work as a partner with parents, families, and the community.
- Participate in and contribute to the teaching profession.
Physical /Mental Demands
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing; reach and lift items ≤ 40 lbs; ability to handle conflict and make decisions under pressure. Reasonable accommodations shall be provided to qualified individuals with disabilities.
Work Environment
Professional setting with diverse individuals; exposure to video displays and outdoor weather conditions; moderate noise level.
Additional Job Information
Employees must read and write English, complete a satisfactory criminal background check, and may be required to work on ASD facilities on military installations.
