Job Description Summary

The duties of this position include accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of human illness. The position utilizes automation, computerization, and manual methods. Responsible for quality control, instrument operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. May be involved in teaching and training, but not in a leadership position. The position handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid and other body fluids. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens.

Responsibilities and Duties

55% – Critical Thinking & Customer Service Uses critical thinking, academic theory, facilitation and advanced customer service skills. Performs complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues. Determines reliability of analytic data before release. Interprets information to make judgmental decisions and troubleshoot technical procedures and instruments. Uses knowledge of medical correlation of data, laboratory parameters, physiologic factors, medication effects, and specific medical treatments to assess validity of laboratory data. Uses appropriate testing techniques to evaluate new testing methodologies and practices. Demonstrates safety and infection control practices. Provides mentorship to new lab associates and students.

15% – Customer Service Provides customer service to clinicians and clients. Comfortable and professional on the telephone; able to communicate with physician staff office, clinical staff, and all laboratory associates. Communicates with patients and their families, using service recovery when necessary.

20% – Quality Assurance & Equipment Maintenance Performs quality control checks on each procedure, equipment, reagents, stains, etc. Documents and interprets all QC data used by technologists to determine validity of patient results and verify instrument performance. Documents and reviews maintenance logs to assure optimum system performance, guaranteeing valid data and eliminating costly, time-consuming equipment failures.

5% – Continuing Education and Competencies Remains current in the field. Trains new employees and students. Maintains competencies and mandatory education requirements (ACE).

5% – Miscellaneous Duties Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Additional Job Description

Four‑year Bachelor of Science Degree. Registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. AMT Certification is considered equivalent to ASCP. Or completion of all required coursework for a Bachelor’s degree and completion of ASCP Certification. Superior customer service skills. Experience in an automated clinical laboratory.
