Job Description
Under the direction of a plumber, a plumber's helper will assist with emergency & scheduled plumbing repairs of standpipe and sprinkler systems. The duties will include, but not limited to the following:
1. Assist Plumber with the following related tasks: perform work relating to the installation, inspection, maintenance, repair & testing of standpipes and sprinklers. Set, maintain and repair plumbing equipment and accessories.
2. Carry tools, working material and equipment and prepare the work location. Move heavy valves, piping fixtures. Cut, drill or prepare openings as may be necessary for the installation, maintenance or repair of fire safety, asset clean work area.
3. Any additional work related to fire safety and the good of the Authority.
Note: Travel to developments citywide is a requirement, with the frequency determined by the supervisor of the work unit.

PLUMBER'S HELPER - 91916
Minimum Qualifications
1. Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a plumber's helper or apprentice plumber or;
2. Not less than one year of experience as described in "1" above plus sufficient plumbing training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade school, technical school or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of three years of acceptable plumber's helper or apprentice plumber experience. The apprenticeship must be recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor or any apprenticeship council which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor. The schooling must be approved by a state's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization. Each year of approved, relevant training is equivalent to six months of full-time satisfactory plumber's helper or apprentice plumber experience, up to a maximum of two years of satisfactory experience.
Preferred Skills
1. Selected candidates must possess, or obtain within ninety (90) days of appointment, and maintain throughout employment, the following FDNY Certificates of Fitness, as required by the position: - S-12 – Citywide Sprinkler Systems - S-13 – Citywide Standpipe Systems - A-35 – Citywide Torch Use of Flammable Gases Failure to obtain and maintain the required Certificates of Fitness may affect continued assignment to the position. 2. Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following: - Possession of a Journeyman certificate in fire suppression - Experience performing Inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of fire sprinklers and standpipes - Experience in Layout of sprinkler and standpipe systems, including knowledge of the complex interference rules - Experience as a pipe fitter in threading, grooving, supporting, and bracing black steel pipe from 1"-8" - Knowledge of sprinkler and standpipe requirements in the Fire Codes of NYC and applicable NFPA standards - Advanced certification in water-based fire suppression systems such as NICET - Experience in Underground utility repair and replacements - Ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings - Ability to braze and weld steel and copper pipe up to 2"
