Rail Operations Specialist

Location: Louisville, KY

Schedule: 24/7 Operation | Must be available for any shift, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed

Position Overview

We are seeking a Rail Operations Specialist to support train and railcar movements. This is a safety-sensitive industrial position responsible for railroad switching operations, crossing control, rail gate security, and compliance with federal railroad safety regulations.

This is not a traditional security position. The ideal candidate is comfortable working around trains, industrial equipment, and outdoor environments while following detailed safety procedures.

Key Responsibilities

• Support safe movement of trains and railcars throughout the facility.
• Operate rail switches, derails, and Blue Flag protection systems.
• Secure vehicle and pedestrian crossings during rail operations.
• Inspect tracks, railcars, gates, doors, and surrounding areas for safety hazards.
• Maintain radio communication with railroad crews, dispatch, and plant personnel.
• Open, close, lock, and secure rail gates and access points.
• Place wheel chocks, traffic cones, flags, and other safety devices as required.
• Respond immediately to rail movement notifications and arrive on scene within required response times.
• Ensure compliance with FRA regulations, Blue Flag protection requirements, and site safety procedures.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Strong attendance and reliability required.
• Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
• Clear and professional radio communication skills.
• High level of situational awareness and commitment to safety.
• Railroad, manufacturing, plant logistics, industrial security, warehouse, construction, military logistics, utility, aviation ground operations, or yard operations experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Walk long distances on uneven railroad ballast and industrial surfaces.
• Lift, push, pull, and operate heavy mechanical rail switches and derails.
• Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Wear required PPE, including:
• Hard hat
• High-visibility vest
• Safety glasses
• Steel-toed boots

Training provided. Candidates must successfully complete all required training, demonstrate competency, and receive approval before working rail operations independently.
