Long-Term Substitute Teacher

Elementary School (Kindergarten)

Position Overview

We are seeking a qualified and dedicated Long-Term Substitute Teacher to provide comprehensive educational instruction and classroom management for students in kindergarten. This position involves assuming the full responsibilities of a classroom teacher during an extended absence, ensuring continuity of learning and maintaining a positive educational environment.

Position Details

  • Position Type: Long-Term Substitute (10+ consecutive school days)
  • Grade Levels: Kindergarten
  • Reports To: Building Principal and Assistant Principal
  • Classification: Temporary, Full-Time during assignment period
  • Work Schedule: Regular school hours as determined by assignment

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Responsibilities

  • Implement and deliver lesson plans as provided by the regular classroom teacher or develop appropriate instructional materials when needed
  • Maintain curriculum continuity and ensure student learning objectives are met
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities
  • Assess student work, provide meaningful feedback, and maintain accurate records of student progress
  • Prepare detailed reports for the returning teacher regarding curriculum covered and student achievements

Classroom Management

  • Establish and maintain a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment
  • Implement established classroom procedures, rules, and behavioral expectations
  • Manage student behavior effectively using appropriate intervention strategies
  • Supervise students during instructional time, transitions, lunch, and recess periods
  • Ensure student safety and well-being at all times

Professional Collaboration

  • Communicate regularly with building administrators regarding classroom activities and student needs
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams, support staff, and specialists as appropriate
  • Participate in required meetings, professional development opportunities, and school events
  • Maintain professional relationships with students, families, and colleagues
  • Follow all school district policies, procedures, and guidelines

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate attendance records and complete required documentation
  • Prepare and submit lesson plans and progress reports as requested
  • Manage classroom materials, supplies, and technology resources responsibly
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding student progress when appropriate

Required Qualifications

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) OR Illinois Substitute Teaching License (SUB)
  • Current Illinois Educator License for Substitutes (ELS) authorization from Regional Office of Education

Experience and Skills

  • Previous classroom teaching or substitute teaching experience preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child development and age-appropriate instructional practices
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Proficiency with educational technology and digital learning platforms
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations

Background Requirements

  • Successful completion of background check and fingerprinting process
  • Current tuberculosis health screening (within past 4 years)
  • Statement of Good Health signed by physician (within 90 days of employment)
  • Compliance with all district health and safety requirements

Preferred Qualifications

  • Elementary education background or endorsement
  • Experience working with students across multiple grade levels (Pre-K through 8th grade)
  • Familiarity with Illinois Learning Standards and curriculum frameworks
  • Bilingual capabilities (Spanish/English preferred)
  • Previous experience in long-term substitute assignments

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to supervise and interact with students of various ages throughout the school day
  • Physical stamina to stand, walk, and move around classroom environments for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and assist students with physical needs as required
  • Visual and auditory abilities adequate for classroom instruction and supervision

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive daily rate: $150 for work days 1-20; -$170per day for days 21+
  • Access to school resources, materials, and technology
