Role Description The Machinist Grinding role is a full-time, on-site position based in the Greater Hartford area. This role is responsible for setting up and operating precision grinding machines to produce and finish tooling components to tight tolerances and quality standards. Day-to-day tasks include reading and interpreting blueprints and work orders, selecting appropriate grinding wheels and fixtures, performing accurate measurements, and adjusting machine settings to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finishes. The machinist monitors equipment performance, performs routine maintenance, and ensures safe operation of grinding machinery and related tools. Collaboration with quality, engineering, and production teams is expected to meet delivery schedules, resolve machining issues, and continuously improve processes.

Qualifications

  • Strong experience with surface, cylindrical, or centerless grinding operations, including setup, operation, and troubleshooting of grinding machines.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and job specifications, with solid understanding of geometric tolerancing and machining symbols.
  • Proficiency in precision measurement using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other inspection tools to verify dimensions and surface finishes.
  • Knowledge of tooling materials, grinding wheels, coolants, and proper selection and dressing techniques to achieve required tolerances.
  • Commitment to safety practices, housekeeping standards, and compliance with shop procedures in a manufacturing environment.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills to identify and correct machining issues and support continuous improvement.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with production, engineering, and quality teams.
  • Prior experience as a machinist or grinder in a precision tooling or manufacturing setting; vocational/technical training or apprenticeship in machining is preferred.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, handle tooling and materials safely, and work scheduled full-time shifts on-site in Greater Hartford.
