Job Summary

We are looking for an experienced Industrial Abrasive Blaster to join our coatings team at our Chandler fabrication facility. This is a hands-on production role supporting structural steel fabrication and coatings operations. You will be responsible for preparing steel — beams, plates, pipe, tanks, and fabricated assemblies — to specified surface profile standards prior to coating application. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, quality, and production efficiency.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Operate pressure blast equipment to clean and profile structural steel and fabricated assemblies to SSPC/NACE surface preparation standards (SP-6, SP-10, SP-5)

Read and interpret work orders, drawings, coating specifications, and inspection requirements to determine correct blast profile and anchor pattern

Inspect surfaces prior to blasting and after for mill scale, rust, weld spatter, and contaminants; communicate deficiencies to the lead or QC.

Set up and break down blast equipment including pots, hoses, nozzles, and containment

Monitor and adjust air pressure and abrasive flow to achieve specified surface finish

Perform daily equipment inspections — check hoses, couplings, nozzles, and deadman handles; report deficiencies immediately

Work in coordination with the coatings crew to maintain production flow and minimize time between blast and coat

Maintain the blast area; reclaim and recycle abrasive media where applicable

Properly dispose of blast waste in accordance with site EHS procedures and waste manifests

Follow all PPE requirements — supplied air respirator, blast hood, leather gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots are required at all times in the blast area

Other duties may be assigned as needed to support business operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

Minimum 2 years of experience in industrial abrasive blasting, preferably in structural steel fabrication or industrial coatings. Experience blasting concrete is a plus.

Working knowledge of SSPC surface preparation standards (SP-6, SP-10, SP-5)

Hands-on experience with pressure blast equipment operation and basic maintenance

Ability to read and follow work orders, coating data sheets, and inspection checklists

Respirator fit test and medical clearance required (coordinated through Loenbro)

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, work in full PPE, and perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods

Must pass pre-employment drug screen and background check

Preferred:

OSHA 10 Construction or General Industry certification

SSPC-BCS (Blasting and Coating Specialist) certification or equivalent

Experience with NACE coating inspection and surface profile measurement tools (Testex tape, DFT gauge)

Familiarity with ISO 12944 or AISC coating specifications

Experience working in a fabrication shop or industrial coatings environment

Valid driver’s license

Work Environment:

Industrial fabrication shop environment — exposure to dust, abrasive media, noise, and chemical fumes is inherent to this role

Phoenix, AZ climate — outdoor and semi-enclosed blast areas subject to extreme heat; ability to work safely in high-temperature conditions required

Full PPE required at all times in the blast area: supplied air respirator, blast hood, leather gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots
