Position Summary
The Department of Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences (BNS) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) invites applications for a Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program Director to lead its NAACLS-accredited MLS program. This is a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level (rank commensurate with experience).

Research & Scholarship
Health Foundations & Medical Research
- Maintain an active, externally funded research program in areas such as:
- Clinical diagnostics and biomarker development
- Infectious disease diagnostics
- Hematologic and immunologic disorders
- Molecular pathology
- Clinical toxicology
- Emerging diagnostic technologies
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at national/international conferences.
- Strengthen collaborations with clinical partners, biotechnology industries, and interdisciplinary research groups within and beyond UMass Lowell.
Program Leadership & Administration
- Provide strategic leadership for the NAACLS-accredited MLS program, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards.
Health & Medical Jobs
- Oversee curriculum development, assessment, and alignment with evolving professional competencies.
- Support student recruitment, retention, and career preparation while promoting an inclusive learning environment.
Teaching & Mentorship
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Applied Biomedical Sciences, with emphasis on Medical Laboratory Science.
- Standard teaching load: 2 courses per semester (with potential reductions and generous release time for assistant professors).
Scientific Equipment
- Advise MLS students and prepare them for certification examinations.
- Mentor undergraduate and graduate student researchers.
About The BNS Department
The BNS department includes 18 full-time faculty and 5 full-time staff, along with postdoctoral fellows and research personnel. The department offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Applied Biomedical Sciences, Nutrition, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Faculty may also mentor PhD students in Pharmaceutical Sciences and participate in intercollegiate doctoral programs in Biomedical Engineering & Biotechnology and Applied Biology.

Minimum Qualifications (Required)
- Earned doctoral degree (PhD, ScD, or equivalent) in a biomedical science field relevant to MLS
- Current MLS(ASCP)CM certification
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively
