Duties
This position is located within the Police Service of the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, KY. You will serve as a first line supervisor of a Police Officer shift consisting of 2-3 police officers. You will be primarily responsible for the enforcement of all laws and regulations for the protection of patients, visitors, and employees; the protection of Government and personal property; and the protection of the civil rights of all individuals on property under the jurisdiction of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the preservation of a peaceful environment requisite to the operation of all treatment programs.
Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Assigns patrol and special operations to their shift;
- Ensures Police Officers are alert to acts of suspicious nature which may result in theft, burglary, assaults, or other crimes;
- Performs routine and recurring duties such as arrests, search and seizures, advising persons of their constitutional rights, transferring arrested persons to local authorities for detention, etc.;
- Adjusts workload assignments to meet unexpected emergency conditions where subordinate Police Officer presence is required.
Work Schedule: Rotating shifts and rotating days off.

Physical Requirements: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable, and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, running, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restrictive areas during search or pursuit activities, or defending oneself or others against physical attack. Body armor must be worn and duty equipment (firearm with extra ammunition, chemical weapon, PR-24 baton, handcuffs, radio, gloves, keys, etc) must be regularly worn or carried. The wearing of this equipment significantly amplifies the physical strain experienced by the employee during physical exertion or during periods of hot weather.

TIME-IN-GRADE: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade level any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
Specialized Experience:
Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-07) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
GS-08: Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience that has been performed independently, under general supervision, and included regularly pursuing and/or apprehending persons fleeing a crime scene or attempting to resist arrest; actually subduing individuals causing disturbances; arresting violators based on eyewitness accounts; performing control desk duties; taking charge of a crime or accident scene and conducting long- and short- range investigations;
experience which provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques, and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly in the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
