Job Title: Phlebotomist II
Job Description
This Phlebotomist II role focuses on performing high-quality specimen collection while supporting workflow efficiency, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training, and recommending process improvements in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and professionalism.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens in accordance with established procedures and test requirements.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure comfort and understanding.
- Label specimen tubes accurately and match all laboratory requisition forms to the correct specimens.
- Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order and protocol.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and maintain specimen integrity by following proper temperature, handling, and storage procedures.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as needed to support a safe and compliant work environment.
- Update and maintain accurate patient information in the appropriate systems.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure appropriate specimen collection and processing.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and quality standards.
- Attend and participate in annual department trainings and other required educational sessions.
- Contribute to workflow optimization by identifying issues, troubleshooting problems, and making recommendations to improve processes.
- Assist with training and supporting colleagues in phlebotomy techniques and procedures as needed.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 2 years of phlebotomy experience, including at least 6 months performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture, blood draws, and specimen collection using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
- Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions or computer labels to specimen tubes and verifying orders.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to comply with all safety and regulatory guidelines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication tasks.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Strong customer service skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and quality.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 2–4 years of overall experience in a clinical, laboratory, or hospital environment.
- Experience updating patient information and handling laboratory documentation and maintenance records.
- Comfort with answering telephone inquiries and reading laboratory results to callers when appropriate.
- Ability to participate in training activities and support the development of other team members.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow detailed protocols and procedures.
Work Environment
This position is based in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory setting and follows a Monday through Friday first-shift schedule with additional Saturday hours. You will work with standard phlebotomy tools and equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen collection containers, and computer systems for order entry and result review. The environment requires strict adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines. The role involves frequent interaction with patients, healthcare providers, and laboratory staff in a professional clinical atmosphere, where appropriate clinical attire is expected.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Edison, NJ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
