Surgical Technician

Duties The Surgical Technician (ST) functions as a

member of the surgical team and provides assistance to the surgeon and other

team members during surgical procedures. The Surgical Technician participates

with the surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures

under the general supervision of the surgical team. The VA Surgical Services is

a joint venture with Department of Defense and is located at the US Air Force

Academy (10th MDG), Colorado Springs, CO.

The Surgical

Technician performs the following major duties:

  • Functions as a scrub person responsible for handling instruments,

supplies, and equipment during complex ambulatory surgical procedures performed

within all surgical sub-specialties for the VA and Air Force Academy

operations.

  • Sets up

sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered

equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers,

ophthalmology, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices,

and other operating room supplies and equipment.

  • Plans and

discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all

supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure.

  • Prepares,

organizes, and maintains complex sterile surgical set-ups.

  • Observes and

responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the

needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended

periods of time.

  • Utilizes

universal precautions and follows all infection prevention policies and

procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment.

  • Assists the

team members with care of the patient, i.e., positioning, prepping, and

obtaining supplies.

  • Handles all

specimens appropriately.

  • Performs

sponge, sharps, and instrument counts in conjunction with the Registered Nurse

circulator. Responsible for the accountability for all surgical instruments and

equipment during the surgical procedure.

  • Assists the surgeon by performing such

procedures as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying

skin staples, and cutting sutures. Prepares prosthesis and surgical devices

during procedures.

  • Assists in

training other members of the Operating Room (OR) team in the operation of

equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and OR procedures to

include the scrub role in surgical procedures.

  • Adheres to

local and VHA policies.

Work Schedule: Full-time, Permanent: Mon-Thurs. 06:30am – 05:00pm

Candidate

must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours. The candidate must be willing to be placed,

detailed or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations.

Preferred Experience

  • Knowledgeable about and thoroughly understanding the concepts and applicability of the Joint Commission (JC) Accreditation Association Ambulatory Health Care.
  • Active Surgical Technologist registration with Colorado Division of Registration
  • Active Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification

Qualifications To qualify for this position,

applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: applying aseptic technique in a sterile surgical field; preparing instrumentation, equipment, and supplies in advance of surgical procedures;

scrubbing for surgical procedures; preparing operating room suites for procedures; knowledge of human body structure and function; anticipating the needs of the surgeon; assisting with minor surgical procedures; maintaining

inventories of medical instruments, supplies, and equipment; and sterilizing instruments.

Experience must be documented in your resume.

OR

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the

experience required for the GS-06 level.

Qualifying education includes: Six months of graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent (1) year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained

from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the (1) year of full-time study requirement. Part
