Phlebotomist Details

Phlebotomist Duties
- Blood Collection: Performing venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood specimens from inmates for diagnostic testing, therapeutic procedures, or research purposes, following established protocols and safety procedures.
- Specimen Handling: Properly labeling and handling blood specimens to ensure accurate identification and integrity, including processing specimens for transport to the laboratory and maintaining appropriate documentation of collection procedures.
- Patient Interaction: Interacting with inmates in a professional and compassionate manner, explaining the blood collection process, addressing any concerns or questions, and providing support to alleviate anxiety or discomfort.
- Infection Control: Adhering to infection control practices to prevent the transmission of bloodborne pathogens within the correctional facility, including proper hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and compliance with standard precautions.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintaining phlebotomy equipment and supplies, such as needles, tubes, and collection trays, ensuring they are clean, sterile, and in good working condition to facilitate efficient and safe blood collection procedures.
- Documentation: Documenting blood collection activities accurately and promptly, recording relevant information such as patient demographics, specimen details, and collection dates/times in accordance with facility policies and regulatory requirements.
- Quality Assurance: Participating in quality assurance activities to monitor and improve the quality of phlebotomy services within the correctional facility, such as participating in proficiency testing, performing quality control checks, and identifying areas for process improvement.
- Emergency Response: Being prepared to respond to medical emergencies within the correctional facility that may require phlebotomy services, such as assisting with blood draws for urgent diagnostic tests or therapeutic interventions under the direction of medical staff.
- Training and Education: Providing training and education to correctional staff on phlebotomy procedures, infection control practices, and safety precautions related to blood collection to promote a safe and efficient working environment.
- Collaboration: Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, including nurses, physicians, and laboratory staff, to ensure coordinated patient care and accurate interpretation of laboratory test results for inmate health management.
Phlebotomist Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited educational institution
- Licensed as a Phlebotomist by the State in which the position is located. The license MUST be in good standing
- 1+ year of relevant Phlebotomist experience
