Job Summary
Lapham-Hickey Steel – Columbus Division is hiring a Material Handler to load and unload structural and miscellaneous steel products. This position ensures that all customer orders are accurately selected, properly balanced, and securely fastened for transport in compliance with safety regulations and DOT requirements. The Material Handler works closely with the shipping and production departments to maintain a clean loading area and ensure timely deliveries.
Responsibilities
- Safely load and unload materials onto flatbed trucks and trailers using forklifts, overhead cranes, or by hand.
- Verify shipment contents by comparing materials to packing lists, load reports, and shipping documents to ensure accuracy.
- Secure loads according to company and DOT requirements using straps, chains, binders, and other tie-down methods.
- Ensure material is properly balanced and weight is distributed evenly to prevent shifting during transport.
- Inspect materials for any damage or defects before loading and report issues to the supervisor.
- Perform daily pre-operation safety checks on forklifts and other material handling equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized loading dock and yard area, keeping it free of debris and obstructions.
- Assist in packaging and crating materials for shipment as required.
- Communicate effectively with truck drivers and production teams to coordinate loading schedules.
- Complete all necessary paperwork and electronic documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Wear approved personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.
Skills
- Previous experience in a manufacturing or warehouse environment preferred.
- Proven experience operating forklifts or overhead cranes; certification preferred.
- Basic understanding of weights, load limits, and distributions.
- Ability to read and interpret packing lists, load reports, and basic blueprints.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure order accuracy and secure loading.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment to meet shipping deadlines.
- Basic math skills for counting and weighing materials.
- Ability and willingness to cooperate with co-workers and work as part of a team.
- Knowledge of general shop procedures and safety precautions.
- Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds or more regularly.
Working Conditions:
Working conditions primarily consist of a plant and yard environment with constant exposure to outdoor weather conditions. The environment is subject to shop floor noise, moving machinery, and heavy industrial activity. Physical requirements include standing for long periods, excessive walking, climbing into and out of trailers, and frequent bending, twisting, and reaching.

Pay: $21.00 - $26.00 per hour
