Duties

DUTIES:

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Supervisor is responsible for supervision of all pharmacy technician duties and assignments at the Little Rock campus of Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS).

The incumbent operates on a broad delegation of authority with independence of action.

These pharmaceutical care activities include inpatient care services that include preparation, distribution, and management of various med dosage forms and products; pharmaceutical care to Veterans; and fulfillment of all organization and regulatory requirements.

Primary roles to provide effective leadership to inpatient pharmacy technician staff. On occasional episodes, may work in the capacity of a GS-6/7 Pharmacy Technician in any area of competency as staffing requirements mandate. The employee assists the pharmacy management in providing optimal pharmaceutical care and timely customer service in accordance with the mission, vision, and goals of the VAMC.

(1) Responsible for planning, organizing and reviewing work, administering personnel matters and dealing effectively with non-professional employees and union representatives in regards to employee-management concerns in a busy medical center pharmacy.

(2) Responsible for developing schedule, planning and granting leave and rotating duties of non-professional staff. Projects overtime requirements based on workload and staffing.

(3) Assist with developing performance standards that are realistic, challenging and support the organizational mission, vision, and goals.

(4) Reviews and completes on yearly basis Performance Appraisals.

(5) Assesses workload volume throughout the day, identifying backlogs.

(6) Provides effective leadership of other technicians in promoting department and organizational priorities such as LEAN, VISN LOC goals, and services that benefit the Veteran.

(7) Monitors workflow patterns to keep drug distribution in accordance with the requirements of Bar Code Administration (BCMA).

(8) Effectively evaluates inpatient activities to assist management to obtain short and long-range objectives/goals.

(9) Assists other pharmacy managers and staff to develop solutions to streamline processes, reduce waste, save costs and improve patient care.

(10) Assists with training, orientation and re-training of employees to Pharmacy Service policies and procedures.

(11) Serves with considerable independence in all areas of pharmacy activity under general supervision of the Chief, Assistant Chief, or Supervisor Pharmacist.

(12) Participates in the identification, evaluation, and recommendations for new automation and workflow process changes within inpatient pharmacy that will promote service excellence and satisfaction for the Veteran and other pharmacy customers.

Preferred Experience:

knowledge of pharmacy automation -Has oversight of

pharmacy automation to include upkeep of equipment, troubleshooting, routine

maintenance, and quality control.

Work Schedule: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including

volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps,

AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic;

religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical

competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and

experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying

experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations: GS-8 -

One year

experience at the next lower level and

must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level. In

addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the

potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk

(*):

  • 1. Ability to evaluate, analyze

workflow, and coordinate work activities.

2. Ability to independently gather,

evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other

projects/statistical purposes.

3. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and

procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff.

4. Comprehensive knowledge of the

operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment.
