Mobile Automotive Technician – Independent Contractor

Pay: $65.00–$100.00 per flagged hour

PART-TIME GIG WORK — FULL-TIME HOURS ARE NOT GUARANTEED.

This is a 1099 independent contractor position and is ideal for experienced automotive technicians looking to earn additional income while maintaining a flexible schedule.

ASE certifications are strongly recommended but are not required to apply. Technicians with multiple ASE certifications, dealer or manufacturer certifications, advanced diagnostic skills, and relevant shop or dealership experience may qualify for higher-paying jobs and rates closer to the top of the advertised range.

Mobile Auto Repair provides the customers and manages the administrative side of each job, including customer inquiries, estimates, scheduling, payments, and ongoing customer support. This allows technicians to focus primarily on diagnosing and repairing vehicles.

Technicians manage their available jobs, schedules, job information, and service updates through the MAR Technician app, available for both iOS and Android.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical issues on gasoline-powered vehicles on-site
  • Complete preventative maintenance services, including tune-ups, oil changes, filter replacements, and other routine maintenance
  • Repair or replace faulty components, including fuel injectors, gaskets, starters, alternators, brakes, and other mechanical or electrical components
  • Test and adjust vehicle systems and components for proper performance
  • Address reported vehicle concerns and accurately identify the cause of mechanical or electrical failures
  • Inspect vehicles for worn, damaged, or unsafe components
  • Conduct pre-purchase vehicle inspections
  • Follow applicable state safety, vehicle, and emissions requirements
  • Manage your time effectively and complete work independently
  • Provide professional service and communicate clearly with customers while working at their location
  • Submit job updates, diagnostic findings, photos, and completion information through the MAR Technician app

Qualifications

  • Professional experience in automotive repair and maintenance
  • Strong knowledge of gasoline engine repair
  • At least one year of professional shop, dealership, fleet, or comparable automotive repair experience
  • ASE certification preferred
  • Dealer or manufacturer certifications are also preferred and may qualify technicians for higher rates
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to accurately identify required repairs
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently at customer locations
  • Ability to manage time effectively and complete assigned work within appropriate labor times
  • Ability to use a smartphone and manage jobs through the MAR Technician app

Requirements

Technicians must have:

  • A strong toolset capable of handling a wide range of automotive repairs
  • Basic hand tools, sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, bolt-removal tools, electrical tools, impact guns, cordless ratchets, pry bars, a floor jack, and jack stands
  • A scan tool or professional code reader
  • Reliable transportation to travel between customer job sites
  • A valid driver’s license
  • A smartphone capable of running the MAR Technician app
  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to pass a background check

Applicants with prior felony convictions may still be considered depending on the nature of the charges, the time that has passed, and their relevance to the position.

Compensation and Job Availability

The average technician currently flags approximately 5–10 hours per week. Some technicians may receive more opportunities, while others may receive fewer.

All jobs are optional. Technicians may review available job information and decide whether they would like to accept the work.

Jobs are quoted and paid using flat-rate labor times based on commonly used automotive labor guides. Compensation generally ranges from $65 to $100 per flagged hour, depending on the technician’s experience, certifications, diagnostic abilities, and the type of work performed.

ASE certifications, dealer or manufacturer certifications, advanced diagnostic qualifications, and extensive professional experience may help technicians qualify for rates closer to the top of the advertised range.

There is no guaranteed minimum number of jobs or hours. Please consider the independent, on-demand nature of this position before applying.

This is a mobile position. Technicians must provide their own transportation and tools and must be located within approximately one hour of the job post location.
