Job Title: Machinist II

Job Description

The Machinist II sets up and operates CNC machining centers to produce precision components according to written instructions, blueprints, and specifications. This role supports daily production by ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to quality standards, while also helping coordinate workflow and providing guidance to less experienced team members within the work area.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC machines and equipment to manufacture parts in accordance with job instructions, blueprints, and work orders.
  • Perform machining operations using appropriate fixtures, tooling, and CNC programs to achieve precise dimensions and finishes.
  • Run previously set up jobs independently and monitor production to ensure consistent output and product quality.
  • Inspect parts during and after production to confirm they meet required specifications and tolerances.
  • Use precision measuring tools, including micrometers and calipers, to verify dimensions and maintain quality standards.
  • Conduct visual inspections and quality checks to identify defects, non-conformances, or potential issues.
  • Collaborate with team members and support staff to meet production goals and improve workflow within the machining area.
  • Provide direction and guidance to Helpers or entry-level team members to support their development and ensure proper work practices.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of production activities, inspections, and data in designated systems, including Microsoft Excel workbooks and Microsoft Access databases.
  • Record and document work performed each day, including sending a detailed pass-down email to the supervisor when working off shifts.
  • Perform basic machine adjustments and troubleshoot minor issues during production to minimize downtime and maintain throughput.
  • Follow GMP and quality control procedures to ensure compliance with internal standards and customer requirements.
  • Apply FIFO (first in, first out) principles when self-scheduling assignments to manage time-sensitive materials and tasks.
  • Read and follow written Lab Request instructions and communicate any discrepancies or non-conformances to the Supervisor and/or Quality Engineer.
  • Handle composite materials, including carbon fiber and fiberglass composites, with attention to time and temperature-sensitive (TATS) requirements.
  • Maintain a strong ethic regarding data integrity, ensuring all recorded information is accurate, complete, and reliable.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards, including proper handling of machinery and materials.
  • Adhere to all safety, quality, and production guidelines in a manufacturing and machine shop environment.
  • Effectively manage multiple tasks in a production environment while meeting deadlines and quality expectations.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3+ years of CNC machining experience.
  • Experience setting up and operating CNC equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to read and follow written instructions, blueprints, work orders, and Lab Request documents.
  • Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, and materials.
  • Ability to perform accurate measurements and basic shop math.
  • Comfort using inspection tools such as micrometers and calipers to verify finished parts.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality in all machining and inspection activities.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to work with production systems, including Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for documenting work and collaborating with team members.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team in a production environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities while maintaining quality and safety standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience performing visual inspection and quality control checks in a manufacturing or machine shop setting.
  • Familiarity with composite materials, specifically carbon fiber and fiberglass composites.
  • Knowledge of time and temperature-sensitive (TATS) materials and their handling requirements.
  • Experience using GMP practices to support quality and compliance.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Excel workbooks and Microsoft Access to record and report production and inspection data.
  • Strong ethic regarding data integrity and accurate documentation.
