Job Summary

Attends to patients being transported by ambulance on emergency and non‑emergency calls and is responsible for the patient’s safety in transit. Under the supervision of a paramedic, this position delivers emergency patient care such as administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen, and rescue breathing with an ambu bag. The role also provides emergency technical care at the scene of an accident or other emergency, including preparation for response, delivery of care, transportation, documentation, and post‑response duties.

The EMT may also participate in life‑safety programs, community awareness programs, and other assigned initiatives.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Visually and manually checks assigned EMS unit and equipment for functional readiness upon reporting for duty.
  • Responds to dispatched calls within one (1) minute of notification between the hours of 0800 and 2300, and no more than three (3) minutes between 2300 and 0800.
  • Completes the Patient Care Report and documents all medical procedures and protocols.
  • Accurately completes patient information on the billing sheet and applies the correct charge code.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of departmental Standing Orders and applies them appropriately.
  • Cooperates with ancillary departments and agencies to assure continuity of care and to aid in any investigation of illness and/or accident.
  • Uses appropriate terminology and language when communicating with patients, families, physicians, and co‑workers.
  • Replenishes expended supplies and sanitizes the ambulance after each use.
  • Assists with daily station duties and other special details as defined by the Standard Operating Procedure.
  • Operates emergency vehicles in a safe manner in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal laws.
  • Continuously observes patients during transfer and monitors for changes in condition.
  • Relays all pertinent information and personal belongings upon arrival at the receiving facility.
  • Participates in community awareness programs and public‑relations events as assigned.
  • Follows hospital exposure‑control plans for blood borne and airborne pathogens, demonstrating knowledge of protective barrier equipment and control measures.
  • Attends and completes all required annual education programs.
  • Maintains professional composure, positive attitude, and confidentiality at all times.
  • Communicates effectively using the appropriate chain of command regarding issues.
  • Uses the Cerner computer system to complete patient documentation and other required entries.
  • Completes work assignments on time and reports to work on schedule, as confirmed by the scheduling system.

Required

Minimum Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s)

  • EMT-Advanced, EMT-Basic, or EMT-Intermediate
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – Instructor

Required Minimum Experience

Experience as an EMT preferred.

Required Minimum Skills

  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written) are required.
  • Willingness to be a team player and a self‑starter is required.
  • Proficiency in obtaining vital signs using manual methods is required.
